The talented Ed Vere uses colorful and direct illustrations to portray a wonderful tail (pun intended) and eye catching scenes! When he finally does meet a mouse, that enterprising little creature assures him that he is a monster, and that the mouse Max is looking for is actually the sleeping monster nearby. I wasn't disappointed though I found it quite odd that he doesn't know what a mouse is as it should be instinctual to know. Here's hoping the success of the Max books encourages a reprint, because the copies at my library are falling apart!
