About this deal

It's something to try to constantly keep in mind for sure, but not something to keep you from reading this fantastic book. Then I read several other Larry McMurtry books, including a recent one this year: The Last Kind Words Saloon. Lonesome Dove is Larry McMurtry's loftiest novel, a wondrous work, drowned in love, melancholy, and yet, ultimately, exultant. While the story deservedly won McMurtry the Pulitzer in 1986, I really can't understand why it doesn't hold a higher position on the 'all-time-classics' argument - after all, everything about this book is just perfect.

Clara Allen – Gus' former love, she declined his repeated marriage proposals during their youth in Texas – for reasons that were never entirely clear to Gus – instead marrying the horse trader Bob Allen and moving to a ranch near Ogallala, Nebraska. Soon the whites would come, of course, but what he was seeing was a moment between, not the plains as they had been, or as they would be, but a moment of true emptiness, with thousands of miles of grass resting unused, occupied only by remnants—of the buffalo, the Indians, the hunters. The raw beauty and harsh realities of the frontier are vividly portrayed, immersing readers in the world of cowboys, outlaws, and pioneers. When the sky had pinked up nicely over the western flats, Augustus went around to the back of the house and kicked the kitchen door a time or two.

Although he probably knew they were standing around the wagons, in easy hearing distance, Bolivar continued to pound the bell for a good five minutes. Interpreter of Maladies is a collection of short stories relating the Indian experience, each wrapped in hope or sadness or a bit of both. It had been pure confusion, since the Indians had been smart enough to fire the prairie grass, smoking things up so badly that no one could see six feet ahead. A revered author in Texas, he was invited by former First Lady Laura Bush to be a special guest speaker at the first annual Texas Book Festival. Journey to the dusty little Texas town of Lonesome Dove and meet an unforgettable assortment of heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and settlers.

The goat meat tasted like it had been fried in tar, but Augustus was the only member of the establishment sensitive enough to raise a complaint. His novels include Terms of Endearment and The Last Picture Show, as well as the screenplay to Brokeback Mountain, which later became award winning films. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove is a book to make us laugh, weep, dream, and remember. Roscoe Brown – The deputy sheriff of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Roscoe is a simple man in his 40s who is content to spend his life minding the sleepy town's jail, but is bullied by July's sister-in-law into tracking down the sheriff and his missing wife.I can't remember why I downloaded this book, but I finally got around to reading it about a year later. Jake becomes increasingly alarmed by the brothers' actions as they travel north into Kansas; the gang progresses from robbery to cold-blooded murder, but Jake is too frightened and outnumbered to either kill them or escape. Long experience had taught him that there was no winning arguments with Augustus, even in cases where there was a simple right and wrong at issue. I hope this review encouraged you to pick up and read this classic if you never had, or to reread it if you have.

Along the way, he saves a whore named Lorena from a vile Indian named Blue Duck and becomes her guardian, only to find himself when he meets with Clara once and for all. It is a rather brutal episode, but the beauty of Gus’ friendship for Lorrie is breathtaking as are the two gunfights, particularly the first one. Hearing that July Johnson has been looking for him, Jake leaves Texas in a hurry in the company of the Suggs brothers, who are, he soon realizes, cruel bandits. Pea Eye (his real first name long forgotten) is not especially bright, but he is brave, reliable, and kind.Well that and all the casual (I take books with me) acquaintances, to the one, they all had to pick it up, look it over. Gus, rebuffed by Clara and no longer Lorena's sole caretaker, decides to continue on the cattle drive and see the journey to Montana through to its end. It had been a real turd-floater, and also a lumber-floater, washing much of the roof straight into the Rio Grande. From page one you are completely taken into this strange world from the not too distant past…and it is as an authentic portrayal of the wild west as is possible, I imagine. After a desperate crossing through the arid basins of Wyoming, the cattle drive arrives in Montana, which proves as lush and beautiful as Jake had described.
