I was so thrilled and lucky to be able to have all 12 tracks mastered at Abbey Road - you just can't get a more iconic studio! Saint of Sinners features a truly haunting violin; that breathes the mournful and ancient quality of our traditional music; paired with a tribal, almost primal percussion section. Having followed her career from the very beginning, that realisation suddenly makes me feel incredibly old, as both milestones seem like forever ago. Yet while the narrative throughout is survival and independence at all times, some of the music doesn’t match, with the assertiveness of one undermined by the ineffectiveness of the other. While her last record was a simple yet charming bouncy folk pop affair, Confessional sees her branching out into new styles and really finding her feet in the process. I’m also really glad that I’ve waited, as I’ve done so much personal growth in these past years – so I’ve never felt more ready and supported to put out an honest album such as this. Janet’s voice enters like an icy gale; gliding over the deep bass tones, before being joined by thundering percussion at the halfway mark.
