About this deal

Given absolute artistic license to interpret and photograph Miyake's designs in surprising ways, Penn achieved this with inventive and unexpected photographs, still framed against his signature pure white backdrops. In March 1992 he was quoted in the International Herald Tribune as saying "Design is not for philosophy it's for life.

Near-fine copies, wrappers a touch sunned, but uncreased and binding still firm; in the original folder, sunned at spine and creased at extremities. Photographs by Irving Penn; afterword by Tadao Ando (in English and Japanese, all other text in English. Hardcover with dustjacket, unpaginated; dj is only good with moderate rubbing marks; internally very good condition; inscribed to Mary Lea Bandy (MOMA Film Dept) on image page after title page; dated 1988 and signed by Issey Miyake (in black marker; the marker bleeds onto the facing title page and the 2 pages after the signature page; no other internal marks. The contents, which are slightly toned to the margins, are clean and without inscriptions or stamps. In 1986 Penn started to shoot Miyake’s seasonal collections in New York, resulting in advertising campaigns, exhibitions, and publications.Irving Penn captures the work of Issey Miyake, exploring the artistic relationship between Penn, one of the most prominent photographers of the 20th century, and Miyake, the iconic fashion designer.

The photographs are directly connected to Penn’s celebrated ethnographical studies, just as the designs reflect Miyake’s interest in a global culture. Inscribed by the fashion designer "For Suzanne Hodgart, Issey Miyake, A ÛN, 1988" and by the photographer opposite the title page.

He also developed a friendship with Apple's Steve Jobs and produced the black turtlenecks which would become a part of Jobs' signature attire.through his eyes penn-san reinterprets the clothes, gives them new breath, and presents them to me from a new vantage point — one that I may not have been aware of, but had been subconsciously trying to capture.
