About this deal

A very wet, 6-day, 95-mile hike through Shawnee National Forest, as well as a few shorter weekend hikes.

Backpacking Light helps hikers and other backcountry enthusiasts overcome their barriers to living a life outside in Wild Places. I just see the snap buttons, but I assume that there are grommets for both the DriDucks Action and the Ultra-Light2? I also knew that a thick vinyl poncho, having worn them in the past, would be heavier, stiffer to move in, and make it more difficult to reach my pockets. As I would not ding an alcohol stove for not being a cannister stove, neither can I fault the poncho for not being a jacket. As mentioned in those threads, the FT poncho is very thin and it will probably not fit over my pack. The trick with non-zipper front ones is often to get in first and lift the pack in after you, then put it on inside.

I believe that the Frogg Toggs Action Poncho is a tri-laminate (3 layers) and the Ultra-Light2 poncho is a Bi -laminuate (2 layers). The placement of said pockets aren’t so low that they are blocked by a hip belt, but they’re not very high, either. The material is already thin enough that durability is a concern on the tri-laminate, I don't know how the UL2 would stand up but I have the Action Poncho and its 8. If you live in areas that are prone to rain or hurricanes, this is a must have for the car, boat, bug-out bag, or your emergency prep box.

Better to go in with a friend - you don't have to worry about running faster than the bull, just faster than your friend . The Ferrino worked well as long as my pack didn't have anything sticking out of it to catch the poncho, then it would get difficult to get it on by myself. You're probably right though, it most likely wouldn't stand abrasion from shoulder straps and hip belt very well. I didn’t encounter any rain on last week’s trip so did not have a chance to use the poncho, but am thinking about making it my default UL rain wear top; in combination with a belt and an MLD rain skirt I will look positively dashing on the trail. Check out our comprehensive Guide to Rain Jackets to earn your degree in waterproof-onomics, and read on to see why the Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2 Jacket is the best bang for your buck in rain gear. Can somebody who has two of these or uses two with a hiking partner tell me if the snaps can be used on two ponchos to form a larger area? I was wearing my usual summer hikers that breathe marvelously (LaSportiva Wildcats), as you would expect water literally just flushed through them on trails that resembled small streams. The bulk of the storm passed overhead in a matter of minutes, but the trailing drizzle hung around for the rest of the afternoon. If I need two poles at the time, I can tuck the umbrella handle in to the chest strap of my backpack.

It is also made from a type of 'breathable' material which, while not highly breathable as new laminated breathable fabrics, does add to staying drier from condensation build up. I know it’s a bit of a risk to use a poncho in this type of environment with overgrown trails, but I’m going to give it a shot for the rest of the year. Using the poncho on thru hikes (PCT and Colorado Trail) and on the Camino during very windy storms, it worked fine. Also, Ponchos are great when the air is pretty still (since they breathe so well) but get a little wild if the wind kicks up and is blowing. The drawcords in the hood worked well to lock out the wet weather, as did the elastic-embedded wrist cuffs.

I, personally do not recommend a poncho simply because it is not ideal in all weather conditions, especially in windy conditions because ponchos are terrible in windy conditions.
