About this deal

The digital version was also listed as one of the best 2020 board game applications by Ars Technica. Alan (7 plays): I have found this a very straightforward easy game to get into and that I’ve introduced to many people. You can almost envision the puff of breath that would accompany the little goblin’s speech as he points out a specific feature of the map laid out before him. All of these decisions are good trade-offs, and there is rarely a "right" answer, at least when the game begins.

The rules changes are also simple enough that I would play this one with my family over Zoom, no question. Scoring is carried out across the entire map, regardless if spaces have been scored before in previous rounds, which means that sometimes it's worth placing your shapes not to score in that round, but for the future ones.I’m a lousy artist and drawing something that would look recognizable in that small a space would take way too much time, so I try to get by with abbreviations for the different terrain types, which usually confuse my opponents and sometimes myself. My criteria were games with simple rules (as I'd be teaching fully over Zoom), fairly non-interactive (since the players wouldn't be able to see each other's boards), and fun.

Monster spaces lose you points (see End of Season Scoring) for every adjacent space that is not filled, so Ambush cards are a way for your fellow players to get in the way of your map-making plans!Players can flip, translate or rotate that shape any which way they like, but it cannot overlap any already-filled spaces, such as the Mountain spaces already printed on the map sheet, the Void spaces printed on The Wastelands map (Side B) or other shapes already drawn, and it also doesn’t have to be adjacent to existing spaces/shapes. You might think to yourself you could survive, but the reality is that you'd die of thirst before you died of boredom, and so we sanitise our touches with the grander examples of nature, by sticking to the path, and coming within touching distance enough to go ooh and ahh, like we are watching fireworks. Take the rest of the Explore Cards, add the first of the Ambush Cards, shuffle this new deck and place it face-down next to the Season deck. Rift Lands mean that each player draws a 1×1 square anywhere on their map of the terrain type on the card. I love the ambush card promo because it doesn't need to be sorted out and adds a little more variety to the monster shapes.

If this next card you flipped after the Ruins card is also a Ruins card, place it on top of the other Ruins card and flip again until you get an Explore or Ambush card. Cards are the only other component and they are a fine quality, although they are a bit thin and my fat fumbly fingers have marred a couple of them already trying to pry them off a solid surface. If there is ever a scenario where that shape is impossible to fit onto your map, players either choose the alternative shape on the Explore card or must draw a 1×1 square. If players flip an Ambush card, take a look at the direction of the arrow shown, and pass your map to the next player in that direction. It almost doesn’t matter if an ambush happens because you can deal with it within whatever you’re already building. If a Ruins card was drawn in the Explore phase, players must place their shape such that it overlaps one of the Ruins spaces on the map. Rather than have dead turns, however, players who are unable to place terrain may instead draw in a 1x1 square of any terrain type. It’s harmless enough, so if others want to play, I won’t veto it, but it’s long enough that I feel like it represents a wasted opportunity and that it’s 45 minutes that I could have spent on something much more enjoyable.

The game would only work if the graphic design of the cards was up to scratch and easy to read, and there has been some real care to make sure that the cards are easy to understand and you get a taste of the overall roll player universe. Yet outside some of the card names, it's easy enough to ignore this (does it matter that the ambush is Kobolds, or that it's a four-square T?We are a group of passionate individuals who share our love of board games through written and video reviews, articles, and humor, so that others can join us in our journey. In solo mode, I’ve been averaging 40 minutes for each session, but once one gets used to the game I’d say 30 minutes is the average. After the four seasons, players will finally add up all of their points, which come from scoring cards each round, coins, and negative points accrued from those pesky ambush cards. So an objective that gives you points for completely filled rows and columns is pursued differently whether it's in the B slot or D (or A or C).
