In a story brimming with hurt/comfort and quiet fireside conversations, these two women will discover just what they mean to each other… and the world. Worn wooden floors, plants on every table, firelight drifting between the rafters… all complemented by love and good company. I found the relationship to be frustrating and more often than not felt like I was being told things, not shown things. Kianthe the Arcandor was by far my fave character and I loved seeing her and Reyna live out their dream.

Now, you might be wondering if something like that could even factor into a “cozy” fantasy–and the answer is a resounding yes. When they first started dating, Kianthe had never considered the little tactics Reyna often employed: separating from impulse, practicing empathy, repeating another's sentence to prove she'd been listening. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. i get that the author was setting themselves up for a second book in the series, but that meant that there was barely any story arc to this one. But Reyna belongs to an elite sect guarding a vengeful queen – and Kianthe is the most powerful mage in existence.

But after an assassin takes Reyna hostage, she decides she’s thoroughly done risking her life for a self-centered queen. All in all, I still mostly enjoyed this, and anyone looking for a cozy fantasy with a little bit more plot/stakes probably will as well. Worn wooden floors, plants on every table, firelight drifting between the rafters – all complemented by love and good company. It leaves off with a bit more story still to come, so I really look forward to the next installment.

This unfortunately massively missed the mark for me, promising a cosy fantasy with a great lesbian couple and delivering. this book has a really bad case of telling instead of showing, and this was one of the biggest spots that illustrated that.I am so excited to get the second book and excited to see how the story continues to evolve and grow.
