About this deal
This audiophile demonstration album contains 13 tracks which were recorded with 50 year old Neumann valve microphones. Don't be fooled just by 'Lean on Me', this album contains many other songs in a totally different style.
Many tracks use the "Decca tree" configuration, invented by engineers in the early 1950's using 3 Neumann M50 microphones.Like those landmarks, Still Bill plays with a mix of consistency, effortlessness, and complexity that rewards repeat listening and transcends categorization. Music Direct reserves the right to change the terms of this promotion or discontinue this offer at any time. Included by The Guardian on its "1,000 Albums to Hear Before You Die" list (2007) as well as in Tom Moon's 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die book (2008), its contemporary standing as one of history's most venerated soul efforts eclipses the positive reception it enjoyed in the early ‘70s. Still Bill boasts the classic Bill Withers sound: warm and easily accessible, with a depth and complexity that reveals itself over numerous plays. On September 7, 1972, the album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), having recorded at least 500,000 copies sold.
The songs on Still Bill are tethered to modesty and actuality, wedded to a belief in simplicity, and connected to universal truths that link us all – independent of our economic or social standing. Bill Withers has a few classic songs to his name (including "Lean On Me," featured here), but his albums don't have that same kind of weight attached to them. I cannot agree with the comments I am reading that say this pressing is sterile, flat, or lacks bass.
