Mostly, they watch movies together and avoid their “perfectly nice roommate” Jake whom they despise passionately (page 6). At this point I’m thinking it’s going to be about mental illness or devolve into something like You.

The seeds of what’s to come are planted from the first page, inklings of gore and discomfort oozing out of Alicia and Remy from the first few chapters, where they watch a “television show about a spy with exceptional fighting-slash-torturing skills… [where] about once every episode someone gets their kneecaps drilled, or is dissolved in a tub of acid. I’m so tired of these experimental, avant-garde, genre bending novels that turn out to be a muddled, unfocused mess. Their dominant common interest is Remy’s former co-worker Jen, an attractive, New Agey, globe-trotting jewelry designer with freckled breasts and braces who unknowingly plays an outsize role in their sex life.Horus picks up on this and asks Jen if she drew this, and the two giggle and banter about the image, Horus insisting Jen leave it there, and Jen laughing and saying she’ll wipe it off. With an imagination like this, Beth Morgan has quite a future in fiction and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

It’s especially cringey because the main characters lack self-awareness while sort of also being hyper self-aware. Also, one of the other main characters supposedly had brain damage as a kid and everything about the treatment of that feels.
