Hunky Dory has received critical acclaim since it’s release, and is regarded as one of Bowie’s best works. Hunky Dory has frequently appeared on several lists of the greatest albums of all time by multiple publications. Many reviewers have perceived the track to have homoerotic undertones; others believed it to be about Bowie's relationship with his schizophrenic half-brother Terry Burns, which Bowie confirmed in 1977. According to his then-wife Angela, Bowie had spent time composing songs on piano rather than acoustic guitar, which would "infuse the flavour of the new album". Originally written for Bowie's friend Dana Gillespie, [49] the song is based around a riff played on two acoustic guitars that heavily resembles the intro of Ron Davies' "Silent Song Across the Land".
