About this deal

Elac's engineers have done a decent though not class-leading job here.The B5.2 aren’t quite as forgiving of partnering electronics as either the Q Acoustics 3020i or Dali’s Spektor 2 due to a presentation that leans more towards analysis than smoothness or warmth. Any shortcomings of the partnering electronics aren’t hidden, but thankfully, not exaggerated either. These speakers merely reflect the quality of the signal fed to them rather than try to sweeten it. In the vast majority of cases we will not be able to install the cabinet doors to built-in laundry products as the fittings very rarely match up. We will try our best however if we are unable to do this we will still install connect to plumbing and put the appliance in situ. The boost at 240Hz finishes off the flattening of the bass response, but can be ignored or turned down if there is a muffling of vocals which can happen with close boundary placement. Debut 2.0 B5.2 features 5-Way Metal post type connectors. Bi-amping and Bi-wiring are not possible.

This is an open and well-balanced frequency range, free to reach high into the treble and deliver ample bass without forcing any more than is comfortable. If you want more low-end, you’ll need a bigger cabinet; these Elacs aren’t going to pretend they’re bigger than they actually are, at the expense of transparency. They have the dynamic expression, detail resolution and tonal sophistication to handle it all, and enough stretch in their abilities to get even better with a system above their natural price range. Rivals may give you a little more richness and texture, yet the Elacs are admirably balanced in the way they deal with poorer or more aggressive recordings, smoothing things out nicely and soothing the faults and flaws with a mature, even-handed touch. Another strange artifact of the felt as smoothing out the measurements, the jaggy results usually seen on my treble measurements are from the sound bouncing off of the front baffle of the speaker To make room for the bigger parts on the board the resistors have been swapped out for some with a vertical form factor. So if you’re looking for a speaker upgrade for a budget micro system, these probably aren’t it. On the other hand, these Elacs will only limit anything too high up the food chain. Transparency is all you might ask of a piece of hi-fi equipment, but it comes at the cost of having to be careful just what it is showing up.

One of the natural alternative to the ELAC Debut 2.0 B5.2 is the Debut 2.0 B6.2 which is located one step higher in ELAC's Passive Bookshelf selection. The B6.2 has a frequency range of 44 Hz to 20 kHz. The Elac B5 will have better treble quality with poorer bass than the B6 within these frequency response ranges. ELAC claims that this increases the unit’s frequency responsiveness to operate more smoothly in the driver’s passband. To get the ELAC B5.2 sounding good you can either turn down the treble knob down on your receiver a little and crossover to a good subwoofer at 80Hz, or use the DSP correction below.
