So good, I would recommend reading a lot of Crumps other books before this one, or it might ruin him for you! The ending was a bit of surprise as well, but added another dimension again to what had been Ricky's (and thus, mine) romanticised version of the experience. A quick and fun read, and from the other reviews it sounds like if you enjoyed the movie the book is also worth your while, if quite different. An adaptation of Wild Pork and Watercress from the late and legendary New Zealand outdoorsman and novelist Barry Crumb, this familiar but perfectly balanced blend of drama and comedy, action and heart was directed by actor-director Taika Waititi , known for his work on projects such as the vampire mockumentary What We Do In the Shadows and also the director of the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok.

So much not my thing: a coming-of-age, a Young-Adult, a "boy" book, a book about survival in the wilderness - and yet. The language is very casual and feels like the reader is hearing the story right from Ricky's mouth instead of reading a book about it.

In Salting the Gravy; A Tale of a Twelve Year Marriage to Barry Crump, by Robin Lee-Robinson (2004). It's great that the film makes this popular but it destroys the authenticity of what is an original and funny tale. Dennison is deadpan as Ricky, successfully negotiating the character's growing maturity as the repeatedly discarded foster child struggles to allow Hec into his life, thereby making himself vulnerable. Soon enough, the two men find themselves on the run, with the police assuming that Hec has kidnapped Ricky despite that not being the case at all.The characters are so real and Ricky is so engaging, and the author manages to get his voice just right. The impassable bush serves up perilous adventures, forcing the pair of misfits to use all their skills to survive hunger, wild pigs and the weather. I'm not sure the book really needs its final chapter (Epitaph) which doesn't add much apart from a note of sadness and I can see why Taika Waititi ends the film differently. Fleur Adcock, one of Crump's ex-wives, said that it was negligence on his behalf that the children died, (despite Crump not being present at the camp at the time of the accident).

A year 8 boy recommended this to his peers during a library session and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this in one go yesterday.Posthumously, Crump was accused by ex-wife Fleur Adcock of regularly engaging in violence against herself and his subsequent wives, describing him as a "sadist. If you would like to feature some of your new work on BM- poetry, short stories, reviews, artwork etc- please let me know. After five months of survival in the wild and numerous near misses, they are eventually apprehended after a car and chopper chase, and Ricky unintentionally shoots Hector.
