About this deal

In my (decades!) of teaching basic math, here’s something I’ve learned that helps. I think that instant recall of the multiplication tables is one of the keys to enjoying math. Or at least not being intimidated. Times tables form the basis for the calculations that you do in the following years, so it’s important that you fully understand them.

Using mnemonics to memorize information, such as math facts, works in much the same way. It is a type of “trigger” (either from emotion or visualization) that tells the brain to retain the information. In the example of the Times Tales program, the memory triggers are stories (or events) that involve characters that are representations of the numbers. Create a visual board for students to look at with a picture of a mountain. Put students’ names up the mountain, depending on how far they got. Students will love competing to reach the top. You can create times tables flashcards and integrate these into mental maths games and activities to help children memorise their times tables facts. Take a look at our collection of times tables games and multiplication games for interactive approaches on how to learn times tables beyond maths worksheets. We hope that this collection of times tables practice will come in handy in your primary maths classroom. For more discussions on teaching primary maths content.
