About this deal

Odessa and Kazan admitted that their government's agencies have little intel on Cassie, and their intent to gift both her and Arnold's heads to their father. This was a fast read for me and I look forward to maybe a series or a kickass Netflix series as it would be perfect for the screen! Despite an attempt at fleeing, Kazan managed to snatch Arnold from Cassie and broke his spine with a single punch, crippling him.

Mostly this was just a confusing mess of flashbacks and short present-day scenes until around the 80-ish% mark when the main character finally does something. There are several things that have unfolded over time, as well as several Character aspects to Furin (no spoilers), that are why he hates Cobalt so much, and her Children, and as a result, is going to kill them to seek revenge on her. The main character never appeared in any real danger, and was completely devoid of emotion or nuance, which was particularly hard to believe when pretty much every big event in the book should have stirred some reaction. It's The Boys meets Captain America with no punches pulled - the action is hectic and non-stop, and the good guys just cannot catch a break.

I love MR's books and usually don't mind if a lot of his characters (particularly his male main characters) feel the same or act as cardboard cutouts. That explains the uneven pacing, but the bigger problem is the author turning a subpar story into a bombastic adventure that makes no sense from start to finish. A year earlier, Cassie and her parents were invited by Black to his lab, wanting to discuss plans to handle the Fury when Cobalt inevitably dies. Let me start by saying I grew up being a huge Matt Reilly fan - I inhaled all of his Jack West and Scarecrow books (all that were released at the time anyway) and couldn’t think of a better author for writing a potential superhero story. America and Russia both have superheroes - the Fury of Russia (all strength, rage, and hate) and Cobalt Blue (full of compassion and intellectual curiosity).

At the surface of the Groom Lake Complex, the Fury meets Black, who gives him two options, join forces and let Black rule America, or he can just kill him. Despite some difficulty, both programs worked, with Furin having six sons, while five boys and two girls were produced from Cobalt's eggs. It’s obviously inspired by The Boys, Shazam, and a dash of Marvel (I mean, Russia’s secret weapon, America’s greatest hero? However, a tiny organism from Venus's atmosphere that had become attached to the probe abruptly burst and released a strange gas into the faces of Dr. Whilst there is a very brutal element to this story (Geez, one of the characters gets his head literally ripped off within the first few chapters!Through the disjointed, confusing and homogenous tone/voice of various head-hopping proto-chapters we're told constantly that Cobalt Blue is this clever hero-in-waiting, but she DOES NOTHING to prove this until she puts on the suit. The Cobalt’s are a loving family, there are the usual family differences (Red doesn’t get along with Green, Black hates everyone etc), but Cassie is the glue, everyone adores their little sister. Interestingly, those original self-published editions of Contest have now become much sought after collectors' items.

The coloured segments are flashback scenes that reflect significant lessons Cassie learns from her siblings and parents that shape how she accepts her role as a hero. Following this revelation, Matthew soon began creating stories of his own and set about writing his first novel, Contest, at the age of 19 while still at university studying law. I'm a massive fan of Matthew Reilly's work because, even though it's often predictable, it delivers action I can really see in my mind. The Fury assumes she means Gary, aka Cobalt Gold, though Silvia indicates otherwise and starts praying as the Fury crushes her head. In the face of an overwhelming attack, one young woman – unassuming and anonymous – might be America’s only hope.S. and Russia sought to create a new generation of these superhumans, with Cobalt donating some of her eggs to be artificially inseminated and brought to term through surrogacy, while Furin merely mated with the thousands of volunteers to try to produce a child. Immediately after hanging up, Walters' office building is infiltrated by the Fury of Russia, who knows Walters is the case officer for Cobalt's secret daughter. To Cassie's astonishment, Black denounces their mother's actions serving America, believing that they should be rulers themselves. However, Reilly manages to pack a full-sized story into this novella, which was originally a screen play that has been converted into what is a brutal thrill-ride from the first pages, to the last. What follows is a period in which there is a new cold war, as the Russian’s reclaim the old ‘Soviet Union’, using their new super powered being as a super soldier to crush the enemies, combatants or not, of any country that won’t rejoin the Union.

Cobalt and Sergeant Furin found that they were evenly matched, and while the former was selfless, working to understand her powers and defend peoples' lives when they needed her, Furin was tyrannical, viscously reclaiming the old Soviet republics and taking whatever he desired, earning the moniker the Fury of Russia. Within the hour, the Fury of Russia and the Furies of Moscow, Leningrad and Stalingrad have convened in the skies over L. Cobalt Blue is another good (possibly series but written like a stand alone) novel, that quickly gets into action and worries about developing characters later. Each character has exactly one stereotypical personality trait of which we are constantly reminded of every time the character is mentioned. The villain is, of course, Russian which means he rapes women, is a serial killer and is just an absolutely atrocious guy. Before the Fury can kill him, Gary - having scarcely managed to escape the Fury's seemingly fatal attack - arrives and knocks the Fury back.
