About this deal

If you have read the first two books in the trilogy, then you know that something big is about to happen.

Beth: Oh that’s such a good point Nils, there was definitely a progression here for Lin, wasn’t there!

There was a great potential there, some of it reflected in her intriguing relationship with Lin's father, and I just felt that wrapping her arc the way it did was a missed opportunity. we were introduced to him as this really smart, quick-witted smuggler and you're telling me it took him over two years to figure out an incredibly simple solution to his entrapment? Compelling, intimate, and fulfilling in equal measure, The Bone Shard War ended The Drowning Empire trilogy emotionally. Nils: I think her main problem was when you’re an Empress there is no right thing and every mistake you make has catastrophic consequences.

It's a stunning idea and for once, I really wish the author would add to it in the future, after the conclusion of the trilogy. Nils: In a way it was good that Jovis had forgotten his traumatic years as a prisoner committing atrocities against the empire, but he’d begun to heal from that and accept his past. It’s always a bittersweet feeling to say goodbye to a great fantasy series you’ve been following for a few years or more. But I didn’t expect it to rip my heart out, leaving me broken and satisfied and happy all at the same time. It’s exciting and emotional, well-paced and gripping, and the ending is everything I never knew I needed. And at approximately 184,000 words, about 10,000 words longer than its predecessor, in my opinion The Bone Shard War provided a breathtaking and highly readable final 150 pages to conclude the trilogy.

When her (admittedly ambitious) dreams of becoming a dragon slayer didn't pan out, she instead turned to writing books. I always found Ranami a little too harsh, too judgemental and not great at seeing another’s point of view, which often made me annoyed at her.Lozhi needed a kinder human companion and Nisong needed someone to show affection and kindness back. Nils: I had to read back over my notes of The Bone Shard Emperor to remind myself where we left the story, however the two year time jump didn’t feel jarring.
