About this deal

The Fuji 56mm F1.2 has a smooth manual focusing ring that is focus-by-wire, rather than using a mechanical clutch-based focus ring, but that's also true of every other Fuji X-series lens. I did review the Fujifilm 90mm f/2 but ultimately decided that it’s not a lens that I need to buy, hello cost of living crisis 2022, but I can definitely see a place for the Fujifilm 50mm f/2 lens perhaps alongside the powerhouse Fujifilm 56mm f/1.2. The weddings I shot recently have reminded me that once you have the Fujifilm 56mm f/1.2, it is not a lens that you could ever sell. It is beautiful.

Not really. There’s a much bigger difference between the 50-140 F2.8 and this 56mm F1.2/50mm F1 combination. Perhaps this was the beginning of my gear acquisition syndrome (but failure to commit due to budget reasons), I never ended up purchasing the lens and traveled the world with my X-T4, the 10-24, and the 55-200.

In the past, an apodization filter has only been used on a manual focus lens, this is the first to use high-precision contrast AF. The 56mm f1.2 is actually a tad smaller and lighter than the Leica Nocticron 42.5mm f1.2 for the Micro Four Thirds system which measures 74mm in diameter, 77mm in length and weighs 425g. But place them side by side and beyond the Leica being a bit longer, they look and feel roughly the same size and weight. In terms of effective / full-frame coverage and depth of field, it’s fair to compare it to models like Canon’s EF 85mm f1.8, which measures 75mm in diameter, 72mm in length and weighs 425g. So all of these lenses are in roughly the same ballpark. To put it in perspective, the Fuji XF 18-55mm f2.8-4 measures 65mm in diameter, 70mm in length and weighs 310g, making the 56mm wider and heavier, but the same length, so it’ll occupy roughly the same space in your bag. The Fujifilm XF 56mm F1.2 R WR is one of the larger prime lenses in the X-system line-up, weighing 445g and measuring 7.6cms in length, which is perhaps understandable given the amount of glass used in its construction. Aside from the continued quality exterior that is featured on all Fujifilm X mount lenses, this lens has been constructed from 11 elements in 8 groups, including, 2 ED (extra low-dispersion) elements, 1 double-sided aspherical element, plus 4 elements with a convex surface facing the subject. All of which combined reduce spherical and chromatic aberration as well as delivering consistent and impressive results. Fast and Quiet AutofocusOnce again compared to lenses released before it, the aperture ring feels better, and great. The aperture ring on my early copy is comparatively looser than any of the newer F2WR lenses, but much tighter than Fuji’s earliest-released lenses. Hood

It's still relatively compact and light enough to feel well-balanced on the X-H2 and X-H2S cameras that we tested it with, although they are admittedly one of the largest X-series bodies currently available. With their apertures wide open both the 56mm and Nocticron rendered blurred specular highlights as oval / cats-eye shapes towards the edges, but this effect was much more pronounced on the Nocticron. However the Nocticron’s blurred highlights suffered from less outlining than the 56mm and to my eyes were creamier too. Both lenses thankfully avoided the concentric circles inside blurred highlights though. I do have some great images from Edinburgh and Florida with this lens (I mean some of the images of the American muscle cars are insane) but when Fujifilm offer the 50mm f/2; a lens that is much smaller, lighter, cheaper, is weather resistant and has fast auto-focus, my mind is telling me to go with the 50mm! His first serious camera was the iconic Olympus OM10, with which he won the title of Young Photographer of the Year - long before the advent of autofocus and memory cards.Today he uses a Nikon D800, a Fujifilm X-T1, a Sony A7, and his iPhone 11 Pro. The apodization filter delivers its best results at wider apertures. To enable wide apertures to be used even in bright environments, an ND filter is included that adjusts brightness in three levels. To indicate the apodizing effect, the lens features an aperture ring showing the effective F No. in red. The difference between the F No. and the effective F No. indicates the effectiveness of the apodization filter.Possibly one of my own most personally anticipated releases from Fujifilm is the new Fujifilm 56mm F1.2 R WR (Mark II) lens. Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as purple or blue fringes along contrasty edges, are not really a problem for the Fujifilm XF 56mm F1.2 R WR lens, except in areas of very high contrast. Vignetting For this minimal difference, I would advise most people to just raise their ISO by half a stop. I don’t think I have ever noticed a difference between ISO 800 and 1200, for example. Center sharpness is superb, even wide open at f/1.2, and gets even better if you stop down to f/2. Mid-frame and corner sharpness aren't quite so amazing, but the results are still above average for an APS-C lens.
