Again, DCI Blair’s role is contentious and interfering, and since his colleagues appear unable or unwilling to punish him, I wonder when karma will have a more active role in any comeuppance. Part of the attraction is that in Beaton's fictional world the characters hardly age at all, they are set in a timeless cozy world of either Macbeth's Scottish Highlands or Raisin's English Cotswalds. Should a child or a vulnerable person vanish, it's an urgent matter that needs to be treated seriously, but in Macbeth's experience, most other people who go missing tend to turn up again before long.

For some reason, the last few books in the series seem to have numerous murders and I'm not sure why this is so necessary for the plot. Macbeth’s romance radar is on the fritz while he mourns Dorothy’s death, but fans know he won’t be out of the market for long. That is, someone took the characters, changed them for their comfort/skill level, wrote something that plays like a shallow echo of the original thing.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I kind of gave it a pass in Green-Eyed Monster because the content was so dark, but I'm really noticing now that Chesney's humour is nowhere to be found in this series anymore. Lots of weird dialogue like Hamish speaking perfect English then lapsing back into his Scottish lilt. You’ll just have to strap on your favorite kilt and visit scenic Lochdubh to find out exactly what is going on.Hamish Macbeth is one of my favorite mystery series to read, but I was worried that Hamish would have a different feel when R.

This all takes place outside of Lochdubh, so we briefly see some familiar faces at times, but the villagers are not prominent in the story. Good moment in the Highlands with Hamish, a good mystery - darker than I expect the McBeths to be, but apparently they become like that ; but still a very enjoyable read.

This Hamish Macbeth novel maintains Beaton's distinctive voice and includes the usual village eccentrics, loads of Scottish lore, and the light humor that Beaton fans have loved through the years. Green has managed to right the cozy course for both series, which had turned nasty towards the end of Beaton's era. I wanted to love it but alas, the new author does not come close to the writing skills of M C Beaton.
