About this deal

The all-new R8 is the newest addition to the industry’s most talked about line of radar detectors. Its dual antenna allows the R8 to detect threats from all 4 directions, with voice alerts for the direction of threat. It even shows the direction, band, and signal strength for each. Perfect just got better. To test the falsing potential, we did drive with the Gatso detection feature enabled and we did find it falsed occasionally to K-band collision avoidance systems of certain vehicles more so than it did with just MRCD/MRCT enabled. Still, it didn’t false to such a degree that it was not tolerable. As Uniden continues refining this detector which future firmware updates, I trust its falsing frequency will decrease. Filtering of K-band blind spot monitoring (BSM) and collision avoidance radar In terms of BSM filtering, I find the detector to be fairly quiet. Most common BSM sources? Mazda CX-5’s, some Honda/Acura’s, Cadillac’s, Jeep’s, and Chrysler’s. Besides the built in K band filter, there are a couple tools we have to deal with falses. For additional insight, browse through the Radar Detector forum, which has an entire discussion sectiondedicated to Uniden radar detectors. There are tons of people on there (myself included) who can help you make the best decision.

All of the best radar detectors currently available, have plenty of radar sensitivity and alerting range (to constant-on police radar) and the differences separating them are not nearly as large as they once were. Some years ago, we tested a bunch of radar detectors outside of Los Angeles and none of them were able to alert to the Gatso RT4 that was being deployed at a number of intersections there. Those systems have since been decommissioned but when we drove through a section of Iowa recently we encountered some of those speed cameras. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the benefit of being able to test the R8 at the time so until we actually encounter an RT4 in actual use, we will have to wait to see how the R8 performs. Ka-band: operating between 33.4 and 36.0 GHz, the Ka-band is the most popular frequency used by police today. If you receive this alert, SLOW DOWN! We recommend leaving this alert on at all times, as it is widely used.Laser tends to get easier to detect when one drives with lighter colored vehicles having sloped hoods because of reflections from the hood tend to be more easily “seen” by the laser sensor so those results are subjected to improving further. Overall we were pleased with the R8’s laser detection, although we always would like more.

As always, this is just one test. Please don’t take these results alone as gospel. We need to see lots of tests with lots of detectors against lots of guns in lots of different terrains to get an accurate sense of the big picture. These test results are simply one part of the overall puzzle. Detectors TestedThe Uniden R8 is a very impressive radar detector. It offers a stellar range, an easy-to-navigate interface, and compatibility with other Uniden devices soon to be released, like the laser jammer. It is highly customizable, but you can plug and go if you don't feel like getting into the nitty gritty. It is also full of features that offer a quiet yet safe ride, and the multiple display modes allow you to alter your viewing experience. Unfortunately, with such a high performance, the R8 is very pricey. That said, if you are the kind of person who likes to have the newest and highest performers on the market and don't mind paying for them, we feel the R8 is well worth the cash. What Other Radar Detectors Should You Consider? You can set the volume level and whether or not you want it to beep depending upon the setting you are in. This setting can easily be customized for every car. For instance, if you are in a noisy vehicle, say a F-150, you can set the detector at a louder volume. On the contrary, if you are in something quieter, you can lower the volume.

Overall though, alerting range differences between the two detectors were smaller and more on par with each other in many of our encounters with police radar. The Uniden R3 offers extreme performance and advanced features like dedicated K-band filtering, K and Ka band narrow sweeps (to increase performance and minimize falsing), band selectable sensitivity, and Multa Radar detection.As I drive towards a radar source, the R8 does a better job of progressively ramping up in signal strength than the RL360c. The Redline likes to scream aggressively well before I’m actually in range of the radar gun. Additionally it does the goofy Escort thing of ramping down slightly and going quiet for a bit before the signal strength jumps and the detector suddenly starts alerting more aggressively. The R8 is more progressive and linear so the ramp-up is more useful and informative. Custom installed systems often consist of both a radar detecting and laser jamming and the Uniden R9 is no exception. The Uniden R8 has an extra filter called ‘Advanced Mode+’ which will provide extra protection against false alerts caused by automatic doors and garage openers that often happen on highways. This is a great feature if you live in an area with a lot of automatic doors around you. False Alert Filtering When it comes to filters, both Uniden R7 and Uniden R8 have the same features. However, there are significant differences in the way they function. Most people don’t need stealth capabilities, myself included, but if this capability is of critical importance to you, you may want to consider choosing another detector. Bluetooth
