A Canadian living in Toronto, Day has also published over 30 other books of mythology, history, fantasy, fiction, and poetry, for both adults and children. An Atlas of Tolkien is a small chronological atlas of Arda, written by David Day in 2015 and published in softcover by Thunder Bay Press (San Diego).

He scripted the 100-part Lost Animals of the Twentieth Century TV series (narrated by Greta Scacchi). Fonstad also made a bold attempt to fill the gaps by using early conceptual work, mainly from The Book of Lost Tales Part One and the Ambarkanta, combining the later known maps with the sketches used by Tolkien to provide "world maps" of Arda in its entirety and show Aman, Beleriand's position relative to Eriador, and the place of Númenor in the Sea.In it, Day notes that this is a compilation of earlier material done at the insistence of his publisher, though he dresses that up. While it states its purpose that "the outcomes of events and battles are told only if they relate to the geographical evolution of Arda," much of the material actually has no bearing on the geography at all. Now, some of the artwork is beautiful, and I think that is essentially, what makes this book good, but, some of it, I didn't appreciate in the least, and for me, it looked too simple. It is a reasonably accurate map of Numenor, through the shape is a little off, especially around the coasts, and the city placement is affected by that. It was not always very well written (I missed some comma's) and it was at times repetitive, but that does not do away with the fact that this was very interesting; now I finally feel I may one day tackle The Silmarillion!

Day's Tolkien's Ring was illustrated by academy award-winning artist Alan Lee, as was Castles, The Animals Within, Gothic and Quest For King Arthur.
