About this deal

The grip section has a series of ribs the section being quite lengthy so the finger position can move up and down for a more comfy writing position. And it wasn't a pretty pen to begin with, because the section is a very light purple; that must have been some special edition, and surely a later production than yours. In my opinion, this is an excellent pen for drawing and sketching that offers some wonderful opportunities for adding controlled washes on suitable paper (as long as you’re careful to avoid the lines you want to keep).

At 18cm in length, it’s not as short as many fountain pens (shown here with a Lamy Safari), tapering off to a narrow rounded end which sits quite comfortably in the hand. Again, I suspect this was to model the pen on dip pens or quills but that main body of the pen (the bit you hold) is a comfortable 10mm in diameter so it’s wide enough where it matters.

But since the ink is fast drying and waterproof, there is a chance that it will eventually clog the channel of the pen. I was surprised at how easily the ink flowed and the amount I could vary the line width with only a slight turn of the barrel. Brought this pen to clean up my line work on paintings it works ok but only just and the ink is really weak not very black more very dark gray. I tried fixing the metal-end back to its plastic body, but I noticed that writing with it was no longer the same anymore – the ink-flow was permanently affected, being rather inconsistent.

And is there a similar pen that is more readily available here in the states theat will perform similarly to this? The only downside I have found so far, is that the nib isn't as fine as you may expect - tested against Rotring fineliners, the line width is somewhere in the range of . So this pen has a wider channel (the slit in the feed) than other pens so there is less chance of ink getting stuck while in the pen.

I plan to try out some noodlers inks and in need of pens to try it with these pens have been earmarked for "sacrifice".The Carbon Desk Pen and Rotring Art Pen are also very good fountain pens and a worthy alternative to more expensive fountain pens. There is no flex obviously, but it provides a smooth flow which is enjoyable for sketching and writing.

To try the pen out with different line widths and shading, I doodled a thumbnail sketch of a tree growing out of a boulder. As an artist, I like knowing that my pen can be disassembled for cleaning because I like using waterproof inks like Noodler’s Black and Platinum Carbon black in them.Thank you Teoh, if I ever have both (which will probably happen) I will tell you how do those nibs compare. For those that like to use watercolors after laying down links, it’s not as the wash will cause the lines to run. I added some water after the initial drawing had dried to see how much the lines were affected by a wet brush. It's surprisingly smooth (which is for me - beight a leftie - is a very good thing) and it's nicely wet. With nostalgia, with reliability, with the fact it has never let me down, despite there being pens out there worth hundreds of pounds with gold nibs etc etc etc, this for me, and has been for a large number of years my go-to pen.
