Here in Old Siam, if you ask to buy a bottle of whiskey, you’ll probably be offered a bottle of Johnny Walker or Chivas Regal. But if you ask to buy a bottle of Thai whiskey, you’ll be offered bottles of Mekhong, Hong Tong or Mangkorn Tong-all amber colored spirits made mostly from sugar cane. Get the difference? Hong Thong is not just popular in Thailand, but it has also gained a following in other countries. It is exported to many countries, including the United States, Japan, and Europe. It can be found in specialty liquor stores and online retailers in these countries.

Blend 285: This is a blended whiskey made using sugarcane and rice. It has a light, smooth flavor and is often served over ice. One of the more accessible celebrations involving Lao Khao, at least when it comes to drinking Lao Khao, is the monk ordination. The manufacturer claims that the composition is also added to a mixture of Thai herbs, spices and plant roots, the recipe of which is kept in the strictest confidence. But this is my opinion and you may think differently, so try for yourself.
