With the large bass woofers, movie special effects that include explosions or deep rumbles are clear-cut and quite noticeable. Low-frequency response is also powerful and there is no discernible distortion even at mid-to-high volume levels.

I am a bass head and the base is very good on these and its enough for most bass heads unless you want to disturb your far neighbours. But when there is a large explosion in a movie, you miss that thunderous feeling of an external sub by say, 10 to 15%. not a big deal. If I had to withdraw a score point it would be the bass port chuffing at very high volumes. I have to add, this is different depending on the room where they play. In the living room (50 m2) it’s hardly noticeable but the set we run in a way smaller room it’s pretty present. Note, bass port chuffing is one of the downsizes that every bass reflex speaker has. However, this poor design is well compensated for by the beautiful remote. All in all, these are speakers for people who put their music listening at Number 1, and their TV watching at number 2 – while still giving you the “bonus” of not having to buy a separate soundbar, and still sounding much better than your average TV’s built-in speakers. Using The S2000MKIII Speakers My only negative when it comes to the design is the weight and also the size they are very deep speakers at 342mm so if you’re going to buy these consider where you will put them first. Bass could arguably have more depth – a Tidal Master play of Ludwig Göransson’s TENET exhibited tight and cleanly delivered bass, but it did feel reined in.So overall if you can get past the size of these speakers you will be impressed by the sound especially when simply using them to listen to music. Yes, they could be an alternative to a soundbar and do a decent job however it’s not their main purpose they are designed to enjoy sweet music. However, the bass range is still excellent. Bass production during movie viewing is a visceral experience. It is something you do not typically see in this price point category.

The front of the speakers has a grille but it is removable, although you need to apply quite a bit of force to do that. The grilles can make the speakers look ugly, thankfully you do not have to keep them on if you don’t like the look. The sound output from these speakers is great but it is not enough to beat the powerful sound produced by Edifier S2000MKIII speakers. During operation, you will notice a hiss sound coming out of the Audioengine A5+ while the Edifier S2000MKIII is totally silent. The tonal balance is also higher in the Edifier S2000MKIII, while the Audioengine A5+ seems to specialize in the midrange and treble offering clearer sound at those levels, but that has nothing to do with its quality but more about the volume levels. When it comes to the real quality of the sound, the Edifier S2000MKIII offers smoother and clearer treble output. There is outstanding clarity across the mid-range at all volume levels.
