About this deal

It combined Kiran’s powerful storytelling with Tom’s beautiful monochromatic illustrations with a single accent colour to create one of the best and most memorable middle-grade novels I’ve read recently. Again, we have a layered tale of a young protagonist dealing with a tough personal situation at home, parallelled with a story of our natural world and one of the endangered animals within it. Beautiful and moving, LEILA AND THE BLUE FOX delicately explores themes of migration, freedom and belonging, through a captivating tale that glistens with wonder.

Wish they would’ve communicated more and resolved things better in the end but at the same time the lack of communication/resolution felt realistic. Leila is a Syrian refugee and after six years of living apart from her Professor mother, she is leaving her new home in London to be reunited with her mother in Norway.

It was an incredibly sophisticated and mature children’s book that could be enjoyed by every reader. Through de Freston’s illustrations the polar bears appear more menacing, the landscape appears more isolated, and the Arctic fox appears more determined. This pocket-sized book presents the most essential poems in his dispensary: those which, again and again, have really shown themselves to work. Around this time last year, I had the pleasure of reviewing Julia and the Shark; the first collaborative efford of Kiran Millwood Hargrave and Tom de Freston. The reader then witnesses a healing journey across the Arctic continent – healing for all involved – and the themes of not giving up hope and finding love become clear. I loved the Paw prints edging the pages too)Amazing how this was based on the true story of Anna who actually did cross a continent. Julia’s sense of exclusion, bewilderment and frightened concern is very sensitively handled by the author, who has herself suffered mental health issues. Whether you are suffering from loneliness, lack of courage, heartbreak, hopelessness, or even from an excess of ego, there is something here to ease your pain. A fabulous collection of all time short story greats - including Dickens, Ian McEwan, Alice Munro, Roald Dahl, Kate Atkinson and so much more.Stunningly illustrated, I loved reading the touching yet exciting at times experience that was ‘Leila and the Blue Fox’. The story explores serious issues such as the environment, migration, family dynamics, and mental health.
