The way that fit together in the end did elevate my rating for this one, despite Willingham's tendency towards overly flowery descriptions and my overall dislike for Isabelle through most of the book.

Like “A Flicker in the Dark” this story is a slow burn 🔥, immediately captivating, plausible story of SUSPENSE-filled with beautiful vivid descriptions, contemplative prose and intricate plotting. I'm glad I gave Willingham another chance and will be interested to see what she comes up with next. Agents, especially, have to be extremely choosy when taking on a new client, so try to look at every rejection as you just slowly checking them off a giant master list, which means that with every rejection, you're getting closer and closer to the one that will eventually say yes. Could a terrible secret from Isabelle’s past—something she has repressed for years—have manifested itself in her adult life, and caused her to harm her son?

I do think this was intentional from the author if you read the authors notes, but it was very good.
