She doesn't come across as likeable in her interviews and this book has confirmed to me that she is mean-spirited. Her subjects range far and Robespierre and Danton, the Hite report, Saudi Arabia where she lived for four years in the 1980s, the Bulger case, John Osborne, the Virgin Mary as well as the pop icon Madonna, a brilliant examination of Helen Duncan, Britain’s last witch.

Most are based on books she’s reviewing, chosen because they’re of interest to her for one reason or another. Where Mantel really shines is in her review of historical books like 'The Recockning: The Murder of Christopher Marlowe' by Charles Nicholl or 'Margaret Pole: The Countess in the Tower' by Susan Higginbotham where her expertise in English history promotes the subject admirably.
