It is April, 1204, and Constantinople, the splendid capital of the Byzantine Empire, is being sacked and burned by the knights of the fourth Crusade. Even when he is sent to Paris to be schooled (and to avoid his growing attraction to Frederick’s new wife, the young Empress Beatrice), his habit of generating false realities continues. It's hard to find comparisons - the Cadfael novels have some similarities but are not in the same league. Philosophical debates are mixed with comedy, epic adventure and creatures drawn from medieval bestiaries.

Some of Kipling's stories come perhaps closest, but he never had the depth of detailed knowledge that Eco has.The young Baudolino’s desire to construct his own version of reality is to become a recurring theme in the novel, for when his theft of Otto’s manuscripts appears to be on the brink of discovery, Baudolino simply forges new ones from his own imagination. After a brief foray into Baudolino's youthful attempts at autobiography, the novel opens in Constantinople in 1204, at the time of the Fourth Crusade. Four centuries later, in 1168, Alessandria was founded as a bastion of the Lombard League against the Holy Roman Empire. He is the author of several bestselling novels, The Name of The Rose, Foucault's Pendulum, The Island of The Day Before, and Baudolino. Baudolino has helped Niketas Choniates, the chancellor of the basileus of Byzantium, to flee the city.

This combination of palimpsest and mixed colloquial Latin, Italian, German and other languages does give Baudolino a substantiality and a knottiness which he loses when he simply starts talking. In Baudolino, Eco has created a worthy literary rival to Frasers' 'Flashman' and, like Flashman, Baudolino inadvertently becomes embroiled in great events of his own accidental making. Nature abhors a vacuum" and things rush into the emptiness of created vacua, both in the flask and in the mind.The family romance extends itself into the romance of travel, the romance of legend, and the romance of desire. Eco’s trademark games with language and narrative structure are just as apparent in Baudolino as they are in his previous novels, as is the humor with which he broaches these difficult ideas about history and language. With the closure of the church in 1803, Baudolino's remains were transferred to the church of Sant'Alessandro and then in 1810 to a chapel dedicated to him in the new cathedral.

this is a book for the intellect (Eco doesn't spare you from thinking), the reader (it's trendously well written), and the funny bone (Baudolinos escapades are as funny as anything in Flashman). His collections of essays also include Five Moral Pieces, Kant and the Platypus, Serendipities, Travels In Hyperreality, and How To Travel With a Salmon and Other Essays. Baudolino is a forger of fictions - his love poems resemble Cyrano, he makes up a letter from the legendary Prester John, ruler of a fabulous faraway land, and devises imaginary maps of the known or speculative world. Without in any way being dry or academic, Eco puts us right in the middle of the philosophical debates of the age, linking us at first hand to Barbarossa, Abelard and Eloise.
