About this deal

Misled by stereotypes of starving artists, I picked an engineering major for college and abandoned art. I decided that I needed to talk to someone from one of the major companies who wore a white lab coat about the wax and oil matter surrounding colored pencils.

Although they can be layered with ease, they will seldom reach the same “buttery” consistency that can be achieved with wax-based pencils. These Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor colored pencils are oil-based and come in a 12, 24, 36, and 72-piece set.Art-n-Fly also has a 72 set, as well as a portrait set, which include some of the same colours in the 48 set. This review is from a beginner’s perspective and the colouring I’ve done has been based on learning techniques from YouTube tutorials which are linked below. The box they come in isn’t a great storage solution because as soon as you’ve sharpened the pencils a few times they become too short to dig out with your fingers and if you tip the box up you either get stabbed with a whole load of sharpened pencils or accidentally tip half of the contents on the floor (not advised!I always try to keep my likes and dislikes out of it and just describe what the products or books are like but it’s always worrying when people are spending their hard earned cash so I’m so so pleased that you like the pencils. The tips of oil pencils are much more resistant to breaking than wax pencils, so techniques like burnishing where the artist applies pressure to create thick layers of pencil can be achieved without breakage. These pencils make a great addition to anyone’s artist arsenal, you certainly will not be disappointed.

As for the colour selection in this 48 set, I do find that there are too many similar reds and yellows. In doing so I completed a marker and colored pencil piece, Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story movies. I agree that there is an overkill of greens but having said that, they are lovely bright greens whereas my Lyra’s are more muted, so it really adds to my colour palette anyway. Oil-based colored pencils use vegetable oil as a binder and tend to be harder than their wax-based counterparts so they tend to hold a sharp point and experience less breakage. They come in a decent range of colors, and both of these Metallic sets have COPPER…, which PRISMACOLOR has discontinued.

However, the good thing is that they are available in both the US and UK, much more than the Markers. At first I assumed that using OMS on say Wax pencils worked wonderfully and on oil pencils it didn’t work, but this was never the case in any of my tests. For accessibility and to locate a particular colour, I prefer the tin box, especially when you have 48 pencils. Known for their smooth application, vibrant colors, and ease of drawing tiny details, oil-based pencils have become a favorite among artists and hobbyists alike.
