About this deal

When the Leader draws a tile with a red number, everyone places their piece, then starting with the player who holds the God piece (initially the Leader), everyone draws a monument tile from the center of the playing area and places it on an area in their landscape. I have enjoyed bringing this game into the classroom to work on planning and decision-making skills. Tiles must be placed so that colors match on all sides of the tile, and they must touch at least one other tile.

At first, it felt a little strange that the Architect is ‘in charge’ but you quickly realise all players have equal opportunities. It adds a nice sense of dread, especially if you’re depending on a specific tile to come up and you’re getting closer and closer to the end. To begin the game you must first decide upon an Architect, who will take one set of tiles, find the tile labelled 1 and set it aside, remove 5 other tiles from their set at random, shuffle them and place the remaining tiles in a face-down stack. The game ends after everyone has placed their twenty tiles, then players score points based on the areas where they have monuments.This is a great gateway game to introduce non-gamers to the wonderful world of more complex board games. First, the Architect draws the top tile from their stack and announces the number printed on its face. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. This is, again, where I think NMBR9 had some good ideas, though I think I like this game a bit better because of the tree tokens.B. Randomly choose a player: this player becomes the Architect for the entire game and begins the game with the Construction token. Between the colourful World tiles (on both sides), and the super pretty Tree tokens, it has great table presence. If you’re a fan of the Carcassonne series, this is a perfect intro-level game for the kids as you work them up to more difficult titles! On its surface, Legendary Forests seems like a fairly simple game, but if you dig a bit deeper…well, it’s still pretty simple. Either way, though, that doesn’t take away (too much) from the fact that this game’s quick, simple, and fun, and those are usually three things that really make me want to recommend a game to someone.

One player, the “Leader”, shuffles their tiles face down, then removes five tiles from play without looking at them. Most of the numbers on the World tiles are on a dark background, but a few are on a light background. Also, at the start of your game, options are limited, so oftentimes you’ll find all players are making the same move.After the last tile has been played, each player totals their points and the player with the highest score wins the game! Since you see all your tiles, you rightfully assume that you’ll get to play all of them, so you may overinvest in certain areas mistakenly thinking that you’ll play all of your tiles before the game ends. If you have no half-circles in this area — that is, the area is completely enclosed — then you score 2 points for each cookie in that area. A game of Legendary Forests ends as soon as all players have placed their 19th tile (when the Architect runs out of tiles) and scoring commences. If there are still tiles left in the Architect’s pile, a new one is drawn and another turn is resolved.

One player will have the construction token and they will have the option of taking a Tree token and placing it somewhere in their forest. This phase is only triggered when the tile drawn by the Architect has a number on a light background . Supporting up to five players, each person begins the game will a full set of twenty-five colored tiles.The original appears to be a semi-tribute to the current fad of block-styled video games like Minecraft where you’re world-building from a birds-eye viewpoint using zones of different colors and blocks to represent points. Be careful not to mix up your unplayed World tiles with the ones you have already added to your Planet. You will face off against other world builders who will work with the same materials that you have to see who can build the greatest forest world. NMBR9 provided bonus tiles as a variant expansion that essentially did that; I wonder if Legendary Forests will ever get any sort of additional content?
