From laughing out loud multiple times, to really feeling the points that she was making, I was thoroughly invested and enjoyed Careering from start to finish. careering follows 20-something imogen, a struggling intern at a fashion magazine who also runs a successful blog on the side, and 40-something harri, who just got passed up for the role of editor in chief and is now trying to launch a new online feminist magazine. Hilarious and unflinchingly honest, Careering takes a hard look at the often toxic relationship working women have with their dream jobs. Harri is meant to be a well-respected old-timer in the publishing world but some of her actions (or more appropriately, inactions) reduced me to skepticism. Daisy really shows both sides of the story so well- especially with the comparison of Louise, another young woman working with Imogen whose biggest concern is her dad no longer paying her extortionate rent if she doesn’t make something of herself. Much like Insatiable, it brushes against some deeper themes, too, including grief and difficult familial relationships. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance.

Not to mention that within these hard scenes, she sprinkled such an effortless amount of humor, that had me laughing out loud on my commute. I listened to this on audio book, so that may have made a difference as to why I didn't connect that well to it.She is working an unpaid internship at Panache magazine and whilst she is thankful for the opportunity, she is fed up of being given the shit jobs and earning no money whilst working pretty much full time.

The zeitgeisty read tackles the myth of the girl boss, with feelings of imposter syndrome, burnout and comparison rife throughout. I laughed a lot at the way things were described and the thoughts that came to mind during Imogen’s chapters. A wide sample of tropes are continually introduced, but skimmed over without much afterthought (for those interested — racial discrimination, classism, power dynamics, the patriarchy, imposter syndrome, sexual harassment, sexual freedom as feminism, familial tensions, anxiety and panic attacks, grief… and that’s not even the complete list). A love story about work, self-worth and modern womanhood, Careering is, quite simply, the funniest novel I’ve read all year.moving in a way that feels out of control*There's a fine line between on the right track and coming off the rails. Apparently the dozens of unpaid internships where she was treated badly were what "made" her who she is today. A great exploration of relationships with ourselves, our families, our colleagues, our past and futures, our careers, our dreams, our voices. While it would’ve been nice to see these areas further developed, Buchanan is at her best poising those existential, quarter-life-crisis questions through a tongue-in-cheek, humorous tone. Will she wake up to the way she’s being exploited before her protege realises that not everything is copy?
