Toda successfully pulls this narrative off in a fresh and exciting way, not only because of what was said in the story, but also because of what was not said. The excellent character acting along with minimalist dialogue are all that’s needed for other trans people who have felt like Chiaki to understand what’s being said under the surface.The main character is a trans man named Chiaki with large breasts, a YouTuber who butchers meat and stream videos of what his father has hunted. When his father broke the news that he had colon cancer, he decided to fake a marriage and pretend to be married until his father dies.

And while I think it is supposed to be a metaphor for how we interact with our possessions, the premise is just a little too weird for me to get into. And I suggest you just skip this one.

Chiaki has a scar on his arm from when, as a child, he interfered during one of his father's hunts when it went wrong, something Chiaki's father is still torn up about years later. The heart of this story is a father-son relationship, and the burdensome expectation Chiaki’s father has put on him to “grow up and be a beautiful bride,” Chiaki’s mother’s dying wish. Because of this, Chiaki, who is transmasc and has been taking hormones secretly for a year, feels like he can’t come out to his father. Chiaki also has a complicated relationship with his feminine body, using it for views and donations on the hunting YouTube channel he runs showcasing his father’s hunting and Chiaki’s butchering skills. When Chiaki’s father announces that he has colon cancer and won’t be receiving treatment for it, Chiaki must choose between a fake marriage to appease his father into treatment or becoming who he wants to be.

This certainly comes with a few content warnings, one of which is for realistic scenes of butchering game, but it's an excellent exploration of interpersonal relationships and a solid short story collection in general. Highly recommended. To Strip The Flesh is a collection of short stories from Oto Toda. The title story is about a transman coming to terms with the unrealistic expectations his father has put on him to “grow up and be a beautiful bride,” his mother’s dying wish, and how that suffocates him.
