When I first got a road bike, I swapped the saddle out for the Bodygroove one I had on my previous commuter. I need to change the seat on my carrera as it is the hardest most uncumfy seat i have had on a bike, I never really bothered with gel/comfort seats in the past, What ever seat supplied with my bso bikes i make do with. Even with that, the riding position isn't exactly racer, but I've got the bike for a bit of fun so it's not the end of the world. I'm probably going to be told I did the wrong thing, but I decided to cut my own slot so it now works fine and looks exactly like the old bike.

The Speedline Carrera Retro Saddle is based on the old Selle Italia TURBO saddles that were so popular in the Late 80s and early 90s. nothing wrong with the vulcan for the money, and it sounds like you know not to expect it to be the cutting edge of bike technology so you aren't expecting too much of it. It was second hand and I'd previously borrowed it from the guy I bought it from (my brother in law).
