About this deal

Crucial's MX500 4TB model comes in a 2.5-inch form-factor and continues to rely on Micron's 3D TLC NAND memory, reports HardwareLuxx. Just like lower-capacity SKUs, the 4TB SSD is rated for up to 560 MB/s sequential read speed, up to 510 MB/s sequential write speed as well as up to 90,000 random read/write IOPS. It is unclear whether the Crucial MX500 4TB drive still relies on Silicon Motion's SM2258 controller, but it is quite likely since switching a controller in a family that is four years old does not make a lot of sense (unless it saves quite a lot of money). Our Enterprise Synthetic Workload Analysis includes four profiles based on real-world tasks. These profiles have been developed to make it easier to compare to our past benchmarks as well as widely-published values such as max 4k read and write speed and 8k 70/30, which is commonly used for enterprise drives. The endurance level of the 1TB variants of both SSDs is identical. The 2TB variant of the Samsung 870 QVO has more durability. So by comparing the data provided by the companies, the 870 QVO comes out to be on top. We topped 4.1GB/s in bandwidth with eight Crucial MX500 4TB SATA SSDs in RAID5. That’s pretty darn impressive all things considered.

I don't have a 4TB Samsung 870 EVO drive on me but I do have the 2TB model which is what I will use in my benchmark below. However, there is a great application of 870 QVO which is to store a large amount of data in a single drive. There are very few 8TB drives available in the market. So, the 870 QVO sits perfectly with that requirement if you have one. I understand that now Samsung has most of these features in their products, but I can't simply go away from a brand that I trust and have been working with their products for years now with success. The SSDs have been working perfectly, they feel pretty fast too, I love them. They still report 100% life, can't explain that. I'm a satisfied customer and can recommend crucial/micron for workstations. Benchmarks Observations: It is evident that the Samsung 870 QVO slightly edges out the Crucial MX500 in both sequential and random read/write performances. While the margin is not substantial, it nonetheless offers a superior performance profile compared to the MX500.To represent a large file usage scenario, we are copying a 5GB ISO image to a different folder on the same drive. Conclusion As for endurance, the Crucial MX500 250GB model is rated for 100TB (TBW) which translates to about 54GB daily writes for 5 years.
