About this deal

Elissa Petruzzi of RT Book Reviews wrote in 2014, "Some consider Loretta Chase’s epic tale to be the best Regency ever written". The blurb was interesting enough, and the reviews I read were mixed, but then I thought, what the hell, and decided to give it go. It was wonderfully, heartbreakingly detailed, and it set the context to what kind of a character Dain was going to be.

Not that Kate Reading didn't do a wonderful job but I find her voice distracting sometimes especially while voicing Dain. Dain is used to purchasing the affections of women with coin, and sees many of them as opportunistic whores (and says as much, projecting many of his mother issues onto the females in his acquaintance). This 'Regency' story doesn't have the standard topic, or the ordinary lovely goodlooking larger-than-life Lord. They get caught in a compromising position at a ball but instead of protecting her honor, Dain just walks away because he thinks she is trying to trap him into marriage just like the other girl. Tough-minded Jessica Trent's sole intention is to free her nitwit brother from the destructive influence of Sebastian Ballister, the notorious Marquess of Dain.Pero en general es una novela con la que me lo paso genial, lo tiene todo y es tan acertada como arriesgada. I did listen to the audiobook while concurrently reading the book and I enjoyed the narration by Kate Reading. These two are one of my favorite couples and I look forward to re-reading this book in the near future! Unloved by his father and told that his mother is an "evil, godless creature", [3] Sebastian is sent off to Eton where he is teased by his classmates over his appearance. The only explanation I could find for it, aside from her skillful writing, was the fact that Jessica was the best and the perfect heroine for Dain.

A minor quibble--I got a little tired of reading about Dain's supposedly huge nose (I get it--his nose was big) and the reference to him as Beelzebub--that just sounded too ugly, and in my head Dain was one giant, sexy man who just desperately needed some lovin'. When her brother introduces her to the Marquess of Dain, there's an immediate attraction between the two of them. Wishing to depict Jessica as the "Extreme Female", Chase emphasizes her clothing and gives Dain "a chance to exercise his caustic wit", as he deems the latest fashions to be ridiculous. And in many ways it is a rollicking, fun read with two likeable MCs who go on a journey of love and self-discovery together. Chase instead modeled Jessica after the type of women who lived a few generations previously and who had "a more practical, frank attitude toward sex".She attended New England public schools, before she went off to college and earned an English degree from Clark University. If things had been toned down just a little, then I think I would have felt a lot more involved in this book instead of feeling like a slightly bemused outsider watching these crazy antics. Now, let’s take a child raised in a home full of love, praise and support, encouraged to be all she could be.

The heroine is bright, strong-willed and definitely not going to fall for a complete cad, but instantly desires the wrong man in the dangerously stormy Marquess of Dain. I could go on and on and still not do this story justice, so I'll stop trying and instead I would just strongly encourage you to read the book. Since her reputation was on the brink of ruin, she went after him relentlessly, not in the pursuing sense but in the "to ruin his life" sense.

Dain doesn’t really care much for Jessica’s brother, but he’s willing to play the game just to aggravate Jess. As an adult, he lived a life of selfish pleasure, spending his time with women who he could pay for his pleasure, thinking no woman would want him voluntarily. Dain coldly departs, assuming Jessica invited the others to force him to honorably marry her, leaving her angry that he would leave her reputation in tatters so casually. Jessica is on a mission to prise her brother from the clutches of teh monster who is ruining his life, but when she meets the Marquis she cannot keep away and things get very complicated.
