For several reasons, undertaking an analysis of letter frequency is not very useful as an approach to solving these puzzles. A number of letters have been decoded to help with the identification of other letters and words in the grid.

They will avoid plurals and, where possible, common suffixes such as ing, ed, en, est, able, ist, ness. Between L and R there needs to be a vowel; we already have E and it seems like O is the only possibility. At this point, the thing to do is to look at the grid and see whether there are words that become either easy or impossible if these guesses are right.The starter letters will be chosen carefully to provide a way in to the puzzle, but don't expect any to be letters that have a high frequency in the puzzle. Excluding those uncommon letters allows us to use a greater range of words, and thus less word repeats throughout the pack.

If you have ever enjoyed an online game of solitaire or the ever-popular Minesweeper, you are familiar with their work. All the letters A-Z are present in the early puzzles, with one number for each letter (later puzzles don't necessarily have all 26 letters in the grid). If you use clues on your first time through, your monthly score for the puzzle will be lower than your best daily score. For example, if there are two consonants in a row, it is very likely that the space before and after them are vowels. Great spelling and vocabulary practice, but it may be difficult for those without a strong grasp of English due to the lack of context. From there, your first priority is to get the common letters out of the way, in particular, the vowels. In spite of the compiler's best efforts, there is likely to be a high frequency of certain letters, such as the vowels and letters r, t, n, d and l. I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct place to ask but it felt a bit strange asking this in a book subreddit primarily filled with readers. With the puzzle I'm using as an example (I'm deliberately not linking to it because (1) I don't know whether it will be available online for ever and (2) the approach is the important thing rather than these details), if I enter the A and E, the next interesting things I find are D----EED, which seems like it should be very informative but nothing springs instantly to mind, and D-A-.

Compensating for this with extra starters simply removes the fun of the puzzle and the solver's sense of achievement at cracking the code.
