About this deal

Vanguard Veterans. Pretty much same again, with the added bonus of being ideal delivery mechanisms for Psalm of Remorseless Persecution. The existence of a Primaris Initiate implies the existence of Primaris Neophytes – the other half of the Templars’ Crusade Squads, these guys are newer, less experienced Astartes who pair with a single Initiate for guidance and training. A bit pricier but also great is Bombastic Delivery. For 2CP this lets one of your Chaplains both automatically recite one of their litanies this Command phase and use one extra litany – so essentially you get to fire off the Litany of Hate in addition to ensuring your most important one for the turn lands. Chaplains are great, Templars give them a bunch of extra utility, and this is a great tool for them – good stuff.

Just three Secondary Objectives here, all with suitably death metal names – exemplified by the first, Bathe Your Blade in the Blood of Your Foe. Sitting in Purge the Enemy, this works identically to the Blood Angels’ Blade of Sanguinius, letting you set up the kind of Warlord fight which is normally a bad idea in the competitive arena but can be a good idea if you think your guy is going to win and score 15pts for doing so. Vow of Retribution (Aura). Subtract 2 from the Ld of enemy models in enemy units within 6” of this model. A -2 modifier is a pretty solid effect, and you can bump that up to a nasty -3 with the Fear Made Manifest Warlord trait plus give enemy units within 6″ -1 to their Combat Attrition tests. The Combat Attrition modifier is whatever, since Marines are largely immune to those modifiers, but throwing out -3 to leadership tests can really start to make things difficult for an opponent, where even units with a relatively high Ld can suddenly find themselves losing additional models after only suffering 1-2 casualties. It’s large enough to be relevant, but the effect isn’t powerful enough to build around. Still, more interesting than it used to be. C+The Crusaders have a ton of options and each has a lot of variations. The way they do the instructions makes it really easy to build them how you want with plenty of color paths. They don’t say it in here but everything is numbered on the parts os technically you could clip everything out at once. Overall these went together pretty easily. They have so many posing options, are really dynamic, and you can’t complain about the detail at all! Stratagems: There’s some real hot stuff here, with a modified (but still strong) version of Devout Push joined by some new friends. Divine Protection and Fires of Devotion are unchanged (which is great news, as they were heavily used), but the other three have all undergone significant revision. Possibly the coolest is Oath of Glory, which is now a self-buff similar to the Mantra of Strength from the base Codex, granting the Chaplain +1 Strength, fights first, and the ability to score 2 additional hits for every 6 to hit in melee. If your goal for your Chaplain is to get him in and start breaking heads, this will give him a big leg up in doing that (though that does mean you can no longer hand out Fight First to other units from these, so make sure to bring a Holy Orb for a critical turn). The datasheets included in the codex has equipment options for the Marshal (Primaris Captain) and Castellan (Primaris Lieutenant), along with the named characters High Mashal Helbrecht and Chaplain Grimaldus. It details the rules for the Emperor's Champion and Primaris Crusader Squad, which are included in this set, and also a firstborn marine Crusader Squad and the powerful Primaris Sword Brethern unit.

Overall this probably didn’t sell as good as GW wanted but it does have some big things for design inside. So as always, if it has value to you, then grab it, if not, then don’t. Get Your Own Box Here!All three squads are kitted out with as many pyreflamers as possible, as well as (heavy) bolt pistols and Astartes chainswords for close-range dominance. 40 angry Space Marines running at you at full speed, supported by a Marshal with the Crusader’s Helm (to ensure they’re all in range of his Rites of Battle aura ability), and a Primaris Ancient to keep them fighting to the last, is certainly an intimidating prospect. The Paired Combatants rule gives Neophytes in the squad the ability to re-roll hit rolls of 1 in melee while it contains as many Initiates as Neophytes, giving them built-in Captain aura re-rolls as long as you aren’t losing Initiates (which, why would that even be happening?), and incentivizes you to take Neophytes and fight with them. Note that, for inexplicable reasons, the Sword Brother does not count as an Initiate, so if you go 20 models, you won’t be getting re-rolls until a Neophyte dies. Warhammer Community previewed these earlier in the week, showing off Abhor the Witch, Destroy the Witch and Accept Any Challenge, No Matter the Odds: Master of Arms. At the start of the Fight phase, if your warlord is within Engagement range of an enemy unit, they fight first that phase. More helpful in 9th edition, and nasty when combined with a Heroic Intervention. C+ First, here we can clearly see the simple box cover in shrink wrap and inside the display case. The glass is so clean the reflection of the carpet makes it a little hard to see, but that is certainly the real box! Primaris Crusader Squad

The Marshal is also super detailed with so much going on, but again, not so much you can’t show off your skills. Final Thoughts Assorted decorations, including purity seals, honour scrolls, candles, martyrs’ bones, lanterns, icons, and what looks like a Holy Hand Grenade… Epitome of Piety. Your warlord can attempt to deny 1 psychic power in each of your opponent’s psychic phases as if he were a Psyker and when he attempts to deny, add 1 to the total. Very helpful for preventing key powers from going off and a monofaction Templars army just won’t have access to many denials otherwise. The +1 actually makes taking it on Grimaldus interesting since it gives him two Deny the Witch attempts at +1 each. B+ The ubiquitous Bike Chaplain and Chief Apothecary help keep the list swinging at optimal efficiency.

Warlord traits have generally stayed pretty similar or seen mild improvements from the Index versions, and are largely fine (if maybe not as exciting as some of the awesome stuff here).
