Being that her book was released last year, the examples she uses to support her arguments are still very fresh in our collective memories – I guess this makes her writing relatable and easy to understand. It is also for black people living in The West who have been struggling to find the language to describe that “thing” they have felt from time to time in their interactions with Western society. Both books look at intersectionality within feminism and how it is important to unpack what feminism is because for many years it has dismissed the perspectives of Black women.

Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu is a lawyer, political commentator and activist for women’s rights, diversity and inclusion, law and politics.Mos-Shogbamimu wastes no time in setting the tone for the book, as on the first page she presents a statement from The Telegraph as follows: “Arguably one of the most toxic voices in Britain’s race relations debate, Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu. In the words of the author, "there is no freedom without rights and no rights without the freedom to exercise those rights. Direct, unapologetic and urgent in her message which centers on the individual doing ‘something now to break away from the structures that choke us, in all areas of life’, Mos-Shogbamimu, an activist, lawyer and political commentator, doesn’t disappoint with this book. More of His Majesty’s English born African, and African Caribbean-heritage subjects need to publish their theological; political, historical, psychological, and cultural remedies for the difficulties and injustice endured daily by African-heritage Subjects. However, there are still questions about how Black authors must bear the emotional weight of teaching others about white supremacy.

Mos-Shogbamimu takes control of this statement and turns the narrative around, refusing to allow the media to vilify or silence her when she is speaking out on the injustices against Black people.Being that Dr Shola’s voice is one of the loudest in Britain’s race relations, this gave her ample opportunity to display her book on her now instantly recognisable mantelpiece, whilst conducting television interviews via Zoom. In This Is Why I Resist activist and political commentator, Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu digs down into the deep roots of racism and anti-blackness in the UK and the US. In the words of the author, “there is no freedom without rights and no rights without the freedom to exercise those rights. Mos-Shogbamimu was a fervent campaigner, an attendee at rallies, but thinks the next move will be a long game. The rest of the book goes on to describe and define racism in all its forms, using case study examples from The UK and The USA.
