Known for his quick wit Graham began hosting a variety of talent shows on BBC One from Strictly Dance Fever and Andrew Lloyd Webber's How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? Immediately positive ideas are dispelled because after Channel 4’s Brookside we are all familiar with the concept of the ‘body under the patio’, and after ITV’s cold case series Unforgotten, bodies defrosting in freezers have become run of the mill. This does not mean that the characters do not transgress the mores of their community, it is more that they feel guilt, or try to cover up their actions, or even move out of town to pursue their desires.Good story, heart-warming elements, strong themes and humour to cut through the dark/surreal elements. There is a lovely type of cosiness around the phrase ‘forever home’, now appropriated by Graham Norton for his latest novel. Oh my GOD Forever Home is FABULOUS… His skill at gimlet-eyed observation and nuanced characterisation is *chef’s kiss* but this book is SO FUNNY… It’s a DELIGHT.

I picked this on up on the strength of Holding - the television series based in a small Irish town, and usually I don’t like to do the whole book vs screen thing (for me, books win every time), but having watched the series (which I can recommend, as all the characters are televisually flawed i. They start erasing her from their family and ignoring the fact that their father loved and cherished her. If you like mysteries that aren’t too graphic that revolves around family relationships, give this book a shot! WENDY, their eldest, a cause for concern, soothes herself with drink after being widowed young, while VIOLET, lawyer-turned-stay-at-home-mother, is disturbed by the reappearance of a son placed for adoption fifteen years earlier.

I like how Norton weaves these issues into his story, the humour not detracting from the serious nature of them. We do our best to select used books that are in fantastic condition, however there may be some defects on the cover or pages. To her dismay, she discovers that the Barry siblings have put the house up for sale, despite it being their father’s wish for the house never to be sold.

It seems there are secrets in Declan's past, strange rumours that were never confronted and suddenly the house they shared takes on a more sinister significance. As always beautifully observed, the beginning is his usual insightful look at people and their actions and interactions, so much so, I found myself thinking “this is our new Maeve Binchy”, which is high praise indeed. Forever Home is a deliciously dark comedy drama, full of secrets, bad decisions and difficult relationships.In his tense and darkly comic new novel Norton casts a light on the relationship between mothers and daughters, and truth and self-preservation with unnerving effect. There are more serious issues dealt with in the book (dementia, child pornography, gay couple having a child), but these are all handled with the lightest of touches so that the book never becomes bogged down but rather stays entertaining and gossipy.
