The author’s research has really paid off as the descriptions are very vivid. The sights and smells and life in the souks and Riads are so well written that it is easy to imagine yourself transported there. Viel mehr zum Inhalt will ich gar nicht verraten; wer Ms Jefferies Bücher kennt, weiß, sie schreibt spannend, bildhaft, mitreißend, super emotional und voller Mitgefühl für ihre Protagonisten, und vor allem sind ihre historischen Romane immer sehr genau recherchiert. Und zwar sowohl im zeitgeschichtlichen Kontext als auch im landestypischen Setting. Genau das habe ich erwartet und bekommen 😊. Ein spannender Krimi in den 60er Jahren in Marokko; garniert mit einem Familiendrama und einer Lovestory – perfekt!

I hope I can find enough words to express my love for this book, "Night Train to Marrakech," written by Dinah Jefferies. It is the third book in the "Daughters of War" series. I haven't read the previous two and found this to be a fantastic standalone read from the trilogy.

I have only 8 days and I want to see Fes, Marakesh and Essouir and may be Meknes. I know its liitle bit to much for so short time. The total journey on the night train from Marrakech to Tangier is about 9 hours. In the reverse direction ( to Marrakech ), the train takes about 10 hours. This is a loose estimate. Trains in Morocco are fairly reliable, but this route can occasionally be faster or take a little longer. All train times and fares are available at http://www.oncf.ma Trains are good and cheap in Morocco.Although this is the third part of the ‘Daughters of war’ series, I didn’t feel I had missed out by not having read the previous books. I felt the three sisters from those books appeared in this story mainly in supporting roles, providing little details as necessary and relevant. I was excited to get my hands on an advance copy of Night Train to Marrakech. I love to share historical fiction and I’m a big fan of Dinah Jefferies. It was a while since I had read the first two books in the trilogy and in a way that was good, because this book can be read on its own. Dinah Jefferies always researches well the locations of her novels and this one is another immersive experience. Morocco is brought to life with its colours, scents, flowers, culinary experiences, its markets and sceneries. We enjoy the way of life in the kasbha of Clemence, far from the noise and bustle of Marrakech. They have day trains from Marrakech to Fez every two hours. The ride goes through Casablanca first, (west of Marrakech ,3 hrs), then continues from Casablanca to Fez (East of Marrakech , 4 hr) . That is the only route available for the train. It is still shorter than the bus. The rides are very comfortable. It is typical sweeping, family saga stuff with a murder and plenty of injuries thrown in, along with secrets which are so easy to guess, and an emphasis on love, mostly tortured love and terrible circumstances. There are estrangement, lots of references to political unrest and a 90+ year old mother suffering from dementia.
