The current Bacardi Ocho reads on the label “Hecho en Puerto Rico” meaning “Made in Puerto Rico”, which makes sense, but if you read the back label of the Bacardi 8 Year Old it says “Product of Nassau, Bahamas”. Together this makes BACARDÍ Reserva 8 satisfying to sip or perfect as a gift for men and women, rum aficionados, and those who appreciate quality and craftsmanship. BACARDÍ Ocho Años Reserva rum is shaped with a secret blend of charcoals to guarantee its unique smoothness.Each batch of Bacardi Ocho Rum is made from a special selection of barrel-aged reserve rums and aged for a minimum of 8 years, giving it a refined flavor with notes of prune, apricot, nutmeg and vanilla. The brand's focus on high-quality sugarcane and meticulous fermentation ensures the foundation of its premium rums. Bottled at 40% ABV with the Bacardi 8 Year Old containing around 12 grams of sugar per litre according to the fatrumpirate‘s measurements, and the Ocho having around 18 grams of sugar per litre according to the Bacardi nutritional info. Each batch is made from a special selection of barrel aged reserve rums which are aged for a minimum of 8 years. Combining subtle notes of oak and maple along with vanilla and caramel, embellished with ginger and cinnamon.

As I mentioned in my earlier review of the Bacardi Reserva I had put off trying the Bacardi 8 due mainly to my dislike of Bacardi Gold. Still this hasn’t stopped the Bacardi Bashers and the Rum Conspiracy Theorists (there are some absolute crackers to be found online) from suggesting otherwise……. To date as far as I understand the Bacardi’s I have tried have been from the Puerto Rican distillery. Alternatively, try this premium golden rum classic cocktails such as the Old Fashioned or Old Cuban. The flavour profile of both rums is consistent, it’s just that the newer bottling took it a few notches higher – it could also be a side-effect of the 8 Year Old sitting in the bottle for longer, but I doubt.

Obviously I’m not a fan of the sugar, but it isn’t that noticeable as it would be in other “latin” rums. The brand's emphasis on sustainability, community engagement, and responsible sourcing underscores its commitment to both quality and ethics.

Both the 8 Year Old and Ocho are made using molasses, distilled using column stills and aged for at least an year before being charcoal filtered and re-casked for 8 years minimum in, most likely, ex-Bourbon casks.
