About this deal

I read this book because of how much I love "Goodfellas," and I was not at all disappointed. Overall, the book parallels the film "Goodfellas" quite well. There are famed film lines that are pulled directly from quotes in the book, which furthers the authenticity that I see in the film. The book is an excellent crime saga, like the movie. First, the it was slightly more fast paced than I expected, with a couple of exceptions here and there. There's always something going on, and it's kinda insane how much these guys were being watched and followed by the police without getting arrested for anything relevant. Honestly, really makes evident the way the mob was just this HUGE organization, and a very untouchable one at that. Specially at the end, when we read about the leaders just offing guys they specifically said were loyal to the end, just because they couldn't take risks. Jake is a resource and utilities writer at Collider and, as a film graduate, loves all things media. As a professional scriptwriter and director with a Masters degree in the former, his documentary and fiction shorts have taken him across his home country of the United Kingdom to many film festivals, with his writing not limited to the screen but also translating onto the stage.

By the way the legendary “Am I some kind of clown, do I amuse you…” scene is not in the book and, apparently, was improvised by Joe Pesci who had seen a real mobster do something similar. To be a wiseguy was to own the world." -- Henry Hill Whilst reading it, it is soon very obvious why Martin Scorsese was so attracted to this story, indeed I can almost imagine his excitement, as he works out how to structure key scenes and who to cast.The author relies heavily on the recollections of Frank Cullotta, a long-time associate and close childhood friend of Spilotro. His first hand accounts prove to be an accurate source of information for the author. Fun fact: Cullotta, who just recently passed away, went on to create several youtube videos and a podcast in his latter years which can still be found on Youtube and the internet. Similarly to Henry Hill who also had a youtube channel, Cullotta had a charming way about him that drew a person in when he spoke. Hard to believe these guys could be capable of the horrifying things they did. But looking at them and listening to their stories, you would think this is the guy next door. Don't believe me? Go look! I have never been very interested in the crime genre, both fiction and non-fiction. That being said, I could not put this book down (figuratively, since I listened to it). This book was recommended to me by my cousin, and even though it is non-fiction it read like a novel. It's crazy thinking that this is actually the story of someone's life. People don't stop watching and reading shit and some of them writing shit... but some are very good writers... some movies are marvelous and make great impact in people's life.

It's not so sympathetic and it's quite brutal and blood thursty. The money and self-interest is everything in this world. In this sense, I will give all the credit to Henry Hill. He was so honest about his detail description. This is an overrated book. But don't worry, all is not lost. It just needs to be re-purposed and moved into a different genre.

The story is a little mundane for a Mafia book, but still well written and an interesting read. I would recommend reading this book if you want to connect the dots and look for the tie-ins after you see the movie. Then watch the movie again and apply the real names to the characters on the screen and see how much of a difference it makes.
