About this deal

The first time I ever encountered First was on my first trip to Paris From NYC in the 1980s. I was nervous for several reasons. A beautiful blond flight attendant in her 40s helped calm me down. She was very fashionable even in her uniform. I noticed her perfume most. When we landed in France I finally asked her what it was. Her response was First. I never encountered it again. Once you passed the aldehyde blast, I mostly get a cool jasmine balanced with a powdery iris and a metallic rose. There's some tuberose lingering but its creamy, sweet notes are against a metallic, and sharp carnation. It all dries down into a very well balanced chypre scent that contrast and evolve with the wearer skin warmth. It works beautifully on my dry skin, as most chypres do. Oakmoss is quite prominent at this stage but is masterly paired with a creamy, indulgent real sandalwood. A true gem often overlooked. It's another great creation of Jean-Claude Ellena, one of his best creations, if not the best. Perfume houses don't do perfumes that can match this. It's interesting: both my daughters told me it reminds them of Niki de Saint Phalle, which was another love of mine during the eighties and which I've also recently reacquired. It never occurred to me to put the two together.In my mind they are very different scents. If anything, First has somewhat of the same vibe as Chanel 19 (another favorite) because of the hyacinth and narcissus. So I compared notes and what do you know - First and Niki indeed have many in common. This perfume matches up with elegant and expensive haute couture and evening gowns. There is no way a woman can wear this perfume with a pair of jeans and a T shirt with a Vegas Baby logo. No. This perfume was meant to be worn with expensive high fashions, for women of discriminating taste, good taste. The best part for me about the new formula is the civet has shut up and its bite is gone. In it's place amber and vanilla, with a rich creaminess and spiciness that is more my style of dry downs in perfume. The moss and vetiver is still there as well. A very cozy soft, sweet but not sugary scent. It is approachable and smells comforting but not elegant. It’s a day scent and a cozy night at home scent, but not a night out. It’s a skin scent for me about an hour after spraying which is perfect for me as a teacher with an hour long commute. I like to smell comforting and approachable when a student comes right next to me, but don’t want to bother anyone who has fragrance sensitivities with an overbearing fragrance. This one fits the bill. When snuggling with my children at bedtime they comment about how good I smell, but I don’t hear anything about how I smell from anyone that’s not very close to me. This is the perfect silliage for a shy girl like myself.

I almost don't want to describe how this smells on me, because it's going to sound bad. After the somewhat obnoxious opening dies down, I smell raspberry, carnation, aldehydes and civet. But it's gorgeous! Spicy and animalic, but somehow still clean. Later, I get a hint of orris root. Not for the fainted of heart, not for the candy-chocolate lovers, not for those who swear by the current ambroxan juices. Oh, and I must say that I'm very surprised that the nose behind First is Jean-Claude Ellena. It seems that he's been in the world of minimalism for such a long time, .....well, people change when time goes by, I guess.This could be over kill, and may make you seem if you are putting on airs if you hesitate or flinch to wear this. At this point this is a complex, rich, boarding on the royal scents or top niche perfumes with names like Clive and Amouage.The drydown with the animalistic civet, honey, oakmoss, sandalwood, tonka, amber and vanilla makes this a very warm rich experience that lasts for hours. You simply can not imagine this fragrance, its better than you imagine in your mind. It must be tried and evaluated on skin.

It does. It has a generic "perfume in an elevator and women are wearing shoulder pads" scent which is even beyond the aldehydes. This "generic 80s smell" is like the top of the top notes. Far from well-known scents, First is an artisanal-fragrance intended to showcase the zenith of years of sensory creativity by Van Cleef & Arpels. It was presented to the world in 2018. This long-lasting parfum has considerable sillage due to its high portion of essential oils. Most eaux de parfum have between 15-20%. Aldehyde was one of the first synthetic ingredients to be used in parfums -- it is what gives Chanel No. 5 it's unmistakeable whoosh-effect. Floral-aldehydics, such as this one, tend to leave a powdery impression as they settle. A Feminine Compilation This is extremely STRONG, the first 30 minutes of wear. I've been wearing lighter fragrances this past couple of years, so this is definitely a jolt. This would lighten the notes quite a bit. This is probably why I liked this particular fragrance after the jacuzzi. This really blends well with my chemistry and hot water... like an incredibly strong and intoxicatingly beautiful tea.The first time I tried this, I couldn't get past the opening notes, and thought I hated it. The opening is very fruity on me, and I don't wear fruity fragrances well. It doesn't smell like Parfum d'Hermes at all, but it reminds me of that perfume in the way that the loud top notes seem out of sync with the rest of it, which is rather subdued. That's not to say that this is an old lady fragrance per se, but I will say that it definitely has that element of class and sophistication to it, but without overdoing the "powdery-ness" like a lot of classic scents, that gives them a certain "theatre makeup" smell. First opens with fresh citrus notes bolstered by bright, soapy aldehydes. Some fleeting sweetness is given by the raspberry note, perhaps with some peach. As it develops, the big floral heart emerges. Wonderfully powdery and old-fashioned, it is a rich, well-blended bouquet. A white floral accord leads the way, with indolic jasmine and a waxy hyacinth-tuberose accord most prominent. Polleny narcissus and slightly sweet rose round it out, with a soft hint of carnation adding spice. The soapiness fades as the indolic florals develop, becoming more carnal than clean, paving the way for the mossy, animalic drydown. And "First" would probably not be a perfume that I would wear every day, because I like to have perfumes that reflect the mood that I'm in - or the activities that I'm doing that day.

floral isnt a garden floral, green isnt a fresh green (usually) honey isnt honey, its not the real honey scent. citrus isnt like the juice you may have tasted or smelled when opening a fruit, expect citrus pith - that white stringy stuff, or the peel its self, and dry as the sahara - the dry talc powder (prada d'orangier has this in a 'linen' way, chloe; love chloe is dry too, its beautiful but not on my skin..really) In season 4, episode 23 of Frasier, the character Niles Crane is speaking on his mobile phone with his wife Maris, from whom he is recently separated at the time. First is a classic aldehydic floral, a scent closely resembling Chanel No. 5 EDT. So First, however, is not a mature scent nor is it aldehydic.
