About this deal

Winterson has written thirteen novels for adults and two previous collections of short stories, as well as children's books, non-fiction and screenplays. Set in 17th century London, Sexing the Cherry is about the journeys of a mother, known as The Dog Woman, and her protégé, Jordan. She suffers through Cromwell’s rule, but as soon as the Restoration of 1661 puts King Charles II on the throne, the Dog-Woman takes her revenge on the Puritans by organizing a brothel to help her behead her awful neighbors Preacher Scroggs and Neighbor Firebrace.

Discovering early the power of books she left home at sixteen to live in a Mini and get on with her education. The narrative switches back to Jordan; he recounts a memory of a town he visited, where inhabitants constantly tear down and rebuild their houses, shifting them to new sites in the town. At the end of the novel, the woman works with Nicholas Jordan to burn down a factory that is pouring pollutants into waterways. The narrative of the story exists outside of time, further emphasising the timeless nature of normative gender identities.

Her strict Pentecostal Evangelist upbringing provides the background to her acclaimed first novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, published in 1985. Jordan speaks this quotation as he becomes more and more obsessed with finding Fortunata, and begins to wonder why. I had finished with that life, perhaps, and could not admit it, being stubborn or afraid, or perhaps did not known it, habit being a great binder. Sexing The Cherry unfolds in a non-linear narrative, and includes perspectives from multiple different characters.

In different versions of the story, either a prince or a soldier is able to determine how they are sneaking about by spying and following them; he is then rewarded with marriage to one of the princesses, and in some versions, the other sisters are married as well. The putrid stench of bawdy seventeenth-century London rips through the novel, immersing the reader in the brutality and physicality of life under Charles I during the civil wars, but how true would it be to say that this is a historical novel? Lies 3: The difference between the past and the future is that one has happened while the other has not.

In many ways the entire novel, in both form and substance, is a tribute to the power of the imagination. Tradescant takes on Jordan as his apprentice, and also takes him on voyages to collect plant specimens. After her marriage, the eldest princess fell in love with a mermaid; eventually, she left her husband and has been living happily with her mermaid lover ever since. Toward the end of the novel two new characters appear: an unnamed scientist who dreams that she is a giantess and Nicolas Jordan, a navy cadet. After the plague, Dog Woman is unsettled and believes London should be destroyed; she is relieved and happy when a severe fire breaks out in 1666.
