NBA 2K23 is absolutely enormous. Look, we know that’s not necessarily what you expected to read: you thought we were going to tell you it’s another copy-and-paste basketball sim from 2K Sports – but this is so much more than a roster swap. The game has age-old issues when it comes to gated progression and microtransactions, but you could comfortably put 500 hours into this release and still find plenty to do. It’s just that big!

With respect Sammy, I will never agree with a review that scores a full price game 2 points away from perfection when there is gated progress and grind encouraging real money microtransactions, regardless if its only in one mode. If they made the MTs accessible but didn't adjust the progression to funnel people towards it I'd be more inclined to accept it, but when you point out that grind is arbitrarily outrageous by design when it really doesn't have to be, we all know it's because they want us to get tempted to spend. It's predatory and psychologically manipulative. 8 out of 10 just feels wrong when these kind of mechanics exist.

On the court, 2K Sports has made some nice balancing tweaks and also improved the overall AI to make matches more dynamic and competitive, and when you pair all of that with all the new animations, you end up with a basketball sim that’s the very definition of a slam dunk. However this year they added a new Semi-Pro difficulty level, which makes the game more manageable without being stupidly easy like Rookie. At this point, the 2K team has its hands full. The team is trying to juggle five core modes, improving and expanding each one every year. That’s on top of managing the creation suite, adding match types like WarGames, making new wrestlers, fixing bugs, plotting out multiple DLC waves, balancing online play, and more. It seems impossible for an annual release, and MyRise is where I can start to see the impact of split priorities. With its increased narrative ambitions comes a sloppy mode that I fear is on the edge of collapse. Meanwhile, an awful lot of work has gone into buffing up the microtransaction-loaded MyFactions.
