As mentioned above, I went into this unprepared for how completely fictionalized the main story in it was, so that would be a big caveat for anyone interested in the events of Agatha Christie’s disappearance. In reading it, it ended up being a fairly different book than the one I’d imagined it to be. The author did a fantastic job of approaching this age-old mystery from a fresh perspective and handled the material with much respect, while ending the story in a slightly bittersweet, but appealingly pleasant way. Maybe she just meant that Genevieve was taken from her and she lost the chance to be her mother? Or maybe she’s admitting that she just wanted to find her daughter more than anything and refused to admit that she died, as the convent claimed.I got all wrapped up in this story. It is very well written, though one will have to stay focused to keep up with the timelines and narratives. The characters are well-drawn, with police inspector Chilton being a personal favorite. In 1925, Miss Nan O’Dea infiltrated the wealthy, rarefied world of author Agatha Christie and her husband, Archie. In every way, she became a part of their life––first, both Christies. Then, just Archie. Soon, Nan became Archie’s mistress, luring him away from his devoted wife, desperate to marry him. Nan’s plot didn’t begin the day she met Archie and Agatha. The narrator, Lucy Scott did a fantastic job of voicing that kept me entertained through the entire story. Her voice has an enchanting overtone much like the captivating Nan O'Dea has over Mr. Christie. Nice touch!

I had much higher hopes for this book. If it wasn’t our book club read I probably would have DNFd it!

P.S. There’s a drunk history episode about her disappearance if you aren’t familiar with the story.) Nan recalls her daughter being born and that she refused to sign papers allowing Genevieve to be adopted. Sister Mary Clare promises she will look out for Genevieve and that no one will adopt her. I did love the main plot exploring the reasons that could have developed in the life of my favorite author but it was the murder mystery woven thru it that held my attention thoroughly. Yes, it was interesting to see the plot devices used by Christie like a hotel, a set of guests, a man dying in the middle of having dinner, it was glorious to return to that Christie set up. This story thou, I believe would have worked equally well without the need for mixing up the real events of Agatha Christie’s disappearance. I have read many books where facts are blended with fiction but I felt this would have been better as out an out fiction without the unnecessary need for the sensational subject matter. Another point that I was irked with was how Nan imagines the scenes that would have played out between Agatha and various other characters. Not sure why the author chose to do that, but it was irritating as if they are not happening in the real but are whimsical and imaginary thoughts of Nan’s mind or probably these words say it all, The Christie Affair by Nina de Gramont has a limited TV series adaptation in the works.
