About this deal

Brad fasteners are commonly used in scrapbooking and binding together documents, but they are also awesome for using with cardboard, especially if you want to create pieces that can move together easily. Get yourself one of those cutting mats. I like my 11x17 but you can get a nice 8.5 x 14 and it can still do the job well. Roofing screws are available in carbon steel and hardened steel. And, as they are most commonly used for outdoor applications, they have a coating that protects them from the elements and stops rusting. They’re available in gauge sizes ranging from 4 to 6.3mm and lengths ranging from 16 to 120mm. For sharp lines, I use medium size nylon brushes with a flat, wide head. (I think it's called a "chisel" brush.) When choosing masonry screws, consider the load it will bear, as different types are suitable for medium or heavy-duty loads.

Once you have those tabs cut and folded over to form the flange, it’s as simple as applying some glue. So, to continue our series of working with cardboard, in today’s post, I want to talk all about different ways you can connect and join pieces of cardboard together. Roofing screws are designed for attaching sheet metal to steel or wood as well as for other general exterior construction tasks. But they can also be used on internal jobs. The flanged (or washered) type of heads have a built-in washer that’s designed to reduce vibrations and stop the screws from loosening. And there are self-drilling and timber varieties available. This method is best for open frames, where two sides need to be spaced apart but still aligned and stable. Simply cut rectangular standoffs from cardboard, and glue them at evenly spaced intervals on each side.

Just last night I was organizing my office/tool storage area. I was thinking it would be nice to have a better way to store my screws and nails. This is a good start. You might be able to use tape with some success, but I am not good with tape and so I avoid it when I can. There ARE some types when you might want to use duct tape however and that’s when you are prototyping + designing something out of wood. For matte paints, softer brushes are better, but you lose some detail, so I go with medium-soft brushes for most purposes. When you need your cardboard to be structurally stable at all points, e.g. for a shelf, making an X-frame with cardboard strips through the center from each corner is often the best way to do it. Masonry screws (also called concrete screws) are self-tapping screws that are perfect for fixing materials directly into stone, masonry, and concrete without needing wall plugs. They have deep, wide threads, ensuring a secure fit once installed. Often used to fix timber, uPVC frames, pipes, and cable housing into masonry. The type of screw heads available for masonry screws include countersunk, double self-countersunk, flange, flat, pan, raised, and wafer. Any old glue will do" is not really a good philosophy for gluing cardboard. Here are some tips for gluing with different types of glue: You can’t use metal screws with cardboard, but these SCRU fasteners work just like screws would when you are connecting pieces of cardboard together. I won't go into much detail, as I have less experience in this area, but for really complex designs or nice cutouts, a laser cutter is the best choice. It can do everything you could do with any of the other tools I've mentioned a lot faster and a lot more accurately than you can by hand. The only thing to watch out for is not catching the cardboard on fire!

This method is good if your cardboard is flimsy, thin, and bends where you don't want it to. Simply take two sheets of cardboard, and glue the faces together so the "grain" or direction of corrugation in the first piece is at a 90 degree angle (is perpendicular) to the "grain" in the second piece, creating an internally crosshatched structure. Painting things is what really sets your projects apart, and where your skills for aesthetics really shine. But on cardboard, that brilliant paint job just doesn't seem to turn out! Here are the best ways I've discovered to paint nicely with acrylics on cardboard. Good for use when gluing cardboard to paper sheets or foil. Infuriating because it dries too fast on paper and too slow on foil, this glue is rarely used in my workshop, so I don't generally keep it on hand. Again, these types of joints as-is are NOT intended to hold or carry any significant amount of weight. To add additional strength and stability to the piece, you will want to cut out circle of cardboard to glue on top of the flange tabs. Okay, that's all I've got. Speech over. My fingers are numb from typing. Maybe I'll record that and add it as a video so your eyes don't go numb from reading, too.Consider what material the plasterboard will be attached to, as different screws are suitable for different materials. For example, there are drywall to heavy steel screws, drywall to light steel screws, and drywall to wood screws. This is also a great opportunity to discuss how the "grain" of cardboard is similar to that of wood - the way it is constructed makes it easier to "cut with the grain" along the corrugated channels, rather than "across the grain" perpendicular to the corrugation. I think this is neat because cardboard is, after all, wood! While cardboard can’t replace wood for certain things (like outdoor furniture or kitchen cabinets for example) – it does bring a lot of new possibilities for smaller projects, especially because cardboard is so easy to get for free.
