About this deal

Though Harry’s pancultural heart is in the right place, her rap diction is about as convincing as, say, trying to imagine Dick Clark belting out “Soul Man. Tracks on the album include Jimmy Destri's Motown pastiche "Danceway", while "Dragonfly" has a science-fiction theme to its lyrics about a race in space. Ignore The Album Cover, The Record Rocks Ignore the idiotic album cover of Deborah Harry looking like Lassie the Collie and rescue dog. It's not really a gem, but it's certainly underrated and also hugely diverse (the intense jungle rock of "Orchid Club," the sci-fi "Dragonfly," reggae of "Island of Lost Souls" and "Little Caesar," low-key jazz of the Smokey Robinson cover "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game"), which makes for an adventurous listen.

The high amount of reverb plus the lack of general sharpness makes this shit sound too airy and distant for this kind of music. Producer Mike Chapman (please read the short essay written by him in the liner notes) knew this would be the last Blondie record he would ever produce. The New York-based rock group was briefly under consideration to perform the movie theme before Sheena Easton was chosen. The first single (and also the only single released from this record) "Island of Lost Souls" is a calypso-flavored gem. But even though band was coming apart at the seams emotionally, I still feel like the music on this record is solid and experimental, more so than any other Blondie album.Appreciate for the potpourri of Third World rhythms, which are handled so well; for the diversity of the music, which runs the gamut from Grace Jones-style club funk to reggae and rap; and, finally, for the literariness of Debbie Harry’s lyrics, which sketch a desolate, despoiled modern world driven by primitive passions. With Autoamerican and, now, The Hunter, Blondie has become more difficult to enjoy, even as the group has strained to become something you can “appreciate. The song opens with the sound of screaming monkeys, then the synth kicks in, and finally the killer drums.The next track, "Danceway" written by keyboardist Jimmy Destri (the songs he wrote for the band are genius) steps slightly away from the jungle theme. The second single, "War Child," is an interesting stab at early '80s electro-rock that hit the UK Top 40, while "English Boys" is a surprisingly mid-tempo mellow pop number about The Beatles. Two singles were released from the album, " Island of Lost Souls" and "War Child" (the latter of which was also released as a 12″ extended version).
