In a few selected cases - usually only very mild lingual displacement - we can consider placing crown extensions on the lower canines to help guide them into a more natural position. It carries some uncertainly and will not be suited or work in all cases. The images below show crown extensions on a young Springer Spaniel. I rarely recommend Ball Therapy for the primary (baby) teeth, preferring to extract those temporary teeth for various reasons. But occasionally we will see a pup whose lower primary canines are just very slightly out of place and for those, Ball Therapy could work. If left untreated this would cause attrition to both of the teeth involved. Pressure exerted by the abnormal position of the canine would cause displacement of the maxillary incisor labially and prevent normal eruption of the associated mandibular canine tooth. The abnormal positioning of the mandibular canine could also cause impingement of the mandibular canine on the palate. The sacrifice of a maxillary incisor tooth would then allow unobstructed eruption or occlusion of an abnormally positioned mandibular canine tooth. This would be less invasive and accommodate retention of the strategically more important mandibular canine tooth ( Figure 3).
