About this deal

The Bullet That Missed hits on every front. Its quandaries stymie, its solutions thrill, its banter is worth reciting and its characters exemplify an admirable camaraderie. One can only hope that the Thursday Murder Club’s next outing appears before long.” You know that the author can write great characters that are humorous, he can certainly write funny, he knows where the jokes can be inserted to make you smile and laugh but what I didn’t anticipate is the writer’s way of dissecting pain and sorrow and put it in wonderful words for us to read. So here’s the anticipated effect, in one chapter you are sobbing and in another you are laughing very hard, you would be looked at as unstable but that’s this book for you. So you are warned, no reading in public places or all the seats next to you will be vacated. This series keeps getting BETTER and BETTER, and this time Richard Osman has combined a cozy mystery with some thoughtfully written sub plots which include the themes of “romance fraud” and “end of life decisions”.

Richard Osman has long been a household name in the UK, but it's only recently that he's become more well-known outside the UK (with people who aren't already Anglophiles or British TV fans, of course). In 2020, he published the first book in his Thursday Murder Club series, and it was an instant hit.In 2020, Osman announced that Amblin Entertainment had bought the rights to the first book to adapt it for a movie. We've had a few updates since, but we're still waiting for concrete information on when we can expect to see the titular club on the big screen. As we have come to expect from Osman's writing, there is more than one tightly plotted mystery to unravel. This is a series where the characters have been drawn so deftly they seem real. These are people I wished they lived in my community! He explained that he thought of it while visiting a bookstore, realising he'd love a Da Vinci Code-style story with a bit of humour and intelligence thrown in. He commented: The Last Devil to Die is the perfect blend of chaos, intrigue, investigation, manipulation, humor and pain. I laughed. I cried. Stephen's letter is absolutely heart-wrenching. I read it several times, wanting to burn the words into my brain, never to be forgotten.

I read the first of this series just before moving in to my "suite" a few months ago. I didn't know whether to laugh, cry or run. As my legs are not up to running I opted for the first two. I won’t rehash the plot since it’s been thoroughly reviewed by others at this point, other than to say it involves a stolen box with a valuable stash inside, the darker side of the antiques trade and forgery, a side story about romance fraud and, of course, murder! Head through Lents Hill, past the Blue Dragon and the little farm shop with the big egg outside, until you reach the small stone bridge over the Robertsmere. After moving in and becoming aware that my new home is a satellite of CC only further north I have been working on my legs; and have so far passed seven copies of the first book out to "villagers" and staff. In the aftermath of their recent murder case, the members of the Thursday Murder Club are settling in for a bit of much needed rest and relaxation. Unfortunately, the arrival of a visitor – an old friend of Elizabeth's – sees their peaceful existence upended once again.

I will say that while this entry was every bit as charming and full of life as its predecessors, it also had more emotional heft due to a loss that impacts all of the characters. As a reader of the series, it wasn’t necessarily unexpected, but the amount of tears I shed was! My apologies to the drivers in the cars next to me who surely thought I was having a breakdown of some sort. Kudos to Richard Osman for handling the potentially controversial topic sensitively, with room for opposing views. I think we're all very aware of how rare it is to find a writer who just never stops delivering. Its like dating in your twenties, you fall for a pretty face across the room and spend a dazzling few weeks or maybe even months being wooed right off your feet with poetry, pretty gifts, and hot sex but then some time goes by and the honeymoon's over and its just the same verse, gifts and positions over and over again. I’ll miss my yearly September visit with the gang next year, as Osman is taking a break from the series to write a father-daughter mystery. Though I’m looking forward to seeing where his creative mind takes him with that story, I hope to see my Thursday Murder Club friends again soon. Fall just isn’t the same without them! OMG! I want to get on the waitlist for an Apartment at Cooper’s Chase and join the Thursday Murder Club! I have to warn you though, this book feels like the series' most intimate and emotional one yet, so get the tissues ready. Osman doesn't shy away from talking about growing old and dying. In fact, couched in all that humor and sleuthing is the ever-present specter of death coming for everyone, especially when you are of a certain old age.

The residents of Coopers Chase have seen a lot, but the impact has rarely been felt so close to home. Drawn into the world of international smugglers and scam artists Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron are on the case. The Last Devil to Die is equal parts well-plotted mystery, scintillating repartee and deep reflection on what it means to love and live.”

The scripts are done. I am not allowed to say any names of actors that are in the frame but everyone we are talking to has been a guest on this sofa," Osman said in December 2022 when he was a guest on The Graham Norton Show.
