It is therefore an excellent detector of small percentages of oxygen and the electronic control unit (ECU) is able to continually adjust above and below the point at which the sensor has an output. The ability of the ECU to learn and adjust the programmed map of information stored in its memory, adds a further precision of control. Both of the links show exactly what I described: a removable nipple which threads onto the male threaded terminal at the top of the plug, so I don't know why you're getting so het up. Could I get one of these allegedly big female nipples (Ooer Mrs) and fill it with solder, then drill it out and get the adaptor thread to self-tap into it? After making an adjustment or revving the engine, allow at least 10 second for it to stabilize. Adjustments to mixture may not be visible immediately.

Inside an internal combustion engine those same coloured flames are present though not normally seen. As described in the original post, they don't ALWAYS, ALWAYS come with one here, because I bought one a few years ago and it didn't have one, just the bare thread. The usual car plugs here don't have that type of nipple, as shown in the linked picture. The other type of nipple is often used on motorcycles here. This type has a "female" threaded hole in the base which accepts the "male" threaded rod that is in the top of the complementary type of spark plug. I THINK these spark plugs are often supplied without the nipple, but I've only bought one once, so this practice probably isn't "universal" either. Determination of the quantity of air going into the engine is itself a difficult task under conditions of varying temperature, varying pressure, and with extreme disruption to the flow caused by valves opening and closing at an incredible rate.

A high speed fuel feed and adjustment (main jet and main mixture screw) normally located closer to the inlet air cleaner mounting flange.The main fuel discharge feeds into a venturi shape, whose restriction (a fixed size choke) gives a low pressure to pull the fuel in. They are quite good, you do need to use them in a darkened garage to see what is happening but its is good for finding a good burn mixture. Its a matter of turning the mixture screw to richen the mixture(you will get a nice yellow burn in the plug) then slowly turning it to weaken the mixture until you get a nice deep blue. If you go to far the other way the flame will go light blue, so it is a matter of experimenting to get it right.

Very simple carburettors found on small motorcycles and garden machinery may have no acceleration device on the carburettor and will need a richer mixture setting at idle to avoid engine stalling or a "flat spot" during rapid acceleration. The development of sophisticated electronic control systems plus a robust exhaust oxygen sensor allowed the three way exhaust catalyst to be introduced. When there is too much air in the mixture, it becomes more difficult to ignite, burns slower, and is therefore less efficient.

To assist with flame visibility, park your car in such a way that the engine is in the shade, (or you may use the viewerscope attachment). The major diameter of the Colortune (0.5498") was greater than the maximum set out by the "SAE" and "Revised British" Standards. I brought this to the attention of both BAI and Gunson, the manufacturer in England. Gunson claimed that the measurement that I provided them with fell right within THEIR tolerances of 0.5455" to 0.5505". Sure enough it does; unfortunately THEIR tolerances didn't coincide with neither the "SAE" or "Revised British" standards. I questioned Gunson as to the source of their standard but no response as of yet. As far as I can tell its complete apart from the bottle of cleaning fluid, but the connector to the ignition lead has a threaded end which doesn't, on its own, make a good connection.
