There wasn’t anything that didn’t really fit, or holes in the storyline, which I’ve come across every now and then when reading a thriller. Jess, a student under strict instructions to keep her record clean or risk losing her scholarship, finds herself at the centre of the investigation when it's revealed that Hugh died in the exact same way as a character in a short story she wrote. Maybe it was intended to be like that, but I would have liked to be on the edge of my seat for just a little longer! The note pages were also a great addition and I think that more books should add this as it makes the whole experience really engaging; it feels like you also solved the murder!

But as one of two scholarship kids—and among a few rare non-white students—Jess Choudhary has a different view of the school. I cannot go into details, because it would spoil some things, but just know that she has a great character development, and even if you don’t like her in the beginning, you’ll probably love her by the end.I really enjoyed it, and it made a refreshing change to books like the Bayview books by Karen McManus (which I also love, but you want variety, right? Not to mention her rather close bond with her mum, which stands in stark contrast with the majority of her peers who have strained or toxic relationships with their parents. You can’t close your eyes and then claim ignorance – people who let bad stuff happen are just as bad as the people who do bad stuff. Jess is at Heybuckle School on her merits, one of very few students who aren't there due to hereditary or new money family wealth. It’s been a while since I read a Marie Lu book and… I’m sad to admit it, because I always have a fantastic time with them.

As I said, the plot wasn’t the most shocking I’ve ever read, but I didn’t really care, because it was still well written and, if you haven’t read as many mysteries as I have, you may even be shocked by some reveals. That being said, I still wanted to talk about some of my recent reads with you, so… here goes with some mini reviews of two YA mystery/thrillers! I really enjoyed the characters and both of their POV, was so intrigued by the whole mystery and entertained by this wild ride of a book, as a whole. For a character so intelligent and self aware, it didn’t make sense to me that Jess struggled to put such obvious clues together in the book. I’ll admit it: I haven’t had my usual blogging frenzy in the past months and I’ve been feeling terribly uninspired.I’d love to know your thoughts on that quick reviewing format, so please let me know in comments if you like it! Find out about the latest book in the 'Girl, Missing' series, Secret Sister, in this short video by author Sophie McKenzie. There might be some things that were lacking in some areas—writing, characterisation, plot etc, but there may have been a few moments that I liked. Jess together with a couple other students will investigate and try to figure out who killed Hugh and why before anyone else gets hurt. The rumour mill erupts with theories as to who could have killed one of the most popular pupils in the school.
